Not sure which area to place this, but I think the seriousness of the situation should warrant the story placed here, as it is as much about Marine as it is a news story. So late afternoon, around 5.30PM our time, an underwater Volcano in the Tongan Island group has gone up with a bang. Serious, not being over dramatic here. Tsunamis have been washing ashore over the Islands and officials are very concerned for Peoples safety. I viewed a Satellite image in the early hrs of this morning of the explosion. The Shock wave around it moved out for thousands or square kilometres. Then the most amazing image. I though at first it was just due to the picture being broadcast back to Earth. But then I realised it was an atmospheric distortion as the Atmosphere was being lifted and displaced out away from the Explosion area as the Ash cloud was rising and spreading out. This caused a lensing effect and the view of the Sea and Islands below on the edge of the cloud distorted dramatically and moved and...well it was all really weired and jaw dropping when you consider the scale of what was taking place. I have not seen a great deal other than the situation on the ground in the news, but a safety bulletin given to authorities in the night has warned that the Ash cloud may even reach NZ. And there are the Tsunamis of course. I am not joking folks. This thing is huge. I am not sure how old the Satillite image is, nor do I fully understand just what islands are part of the Tongan group, but the ash cloud spread out to cover the entire surrounding Tongan Island group. That entire group of all Islands is under a cloud of Ash. It is unbelievable. www.theguardian.com/world/video/2022/jan/15/tonga-underwater-volcanic-eruption-creates-tsunami-waves-video

I'd suggest that is the end of tutukaka as a permanent marina. It has been continually effected by tsunami in the past that haven't bothered the rest of the country. I can't see insurers willing to take on that risk in future
Whitianga has been affected. Channel markers and some moored boats reported to have been moved but some of that could be the storm waves which do tend to circulate near the harbour entrance

"It had been active from December 20, 2021, but was declared dormant on January 11."

Just heard a hydro specialist from NIWA saying it’s a compounding effect of surges from cyclone Cody + surges from tsunami activity which occasionally coincide to create a bigger thing.
Here at GH they apparently had a wave which overtopped the marina breakwater on the E side of the entrance and sent a surge down along the length of Z,A & B piers - which apparently caused some mild damage to a boat berthed right near the exposed end of B pier - I’m going to see if I can see it later.
And the biggest surge seems to have been around 1am which was at low tide for Auckland - imagine it could have been much worse if high tide (nearly 2m higher sea level)…

The cyclone swell effect will obviously subside naturally over next few days but this volcanic event looks massive - I wonder how long it will continue to effect waters around NZ?
I’m now thinking ahead to my plan to sail towards Mercs & Whitianga on Thur / Fri…

Have you seen the reports that said there was zero warning for the people in Tuts ie no text or sirens? As opposed to several warnings on previous occasions which came to nothing.
I’ve always had doubts about the whole Civil Defence machine and if this report is true then this supports my view that they are dysfunctional.

Abundance of caution, plus the person with the alert button was still on holiday?
Held off announcing till Monday so it could be done at the 1pm podium?
Take your pick, its Government looking after us the best they know how.

Terrible news, the red catamaran belongs to good friends of mine Oh no, sorry to hear that CZ! Insured I hope? I hope so, Tutukaka was home port so I expect marina would have required insurance. Unfortunately beyond this loss, and my other friend's cat which had the crane dropped on it in December, it has been a terrible 12 mths for marine insurance claims, which the insurers will be seeking to recover in future premiums from all of us I went down to Sandspit earlier on, no issues there but the moored boats were pointing in strange directions, not consistent with the tide and wind. One berth owner was sleeping on his boat last night, heard some noise around 00.15, got up to have a look and saw that there was a very strong water flow past all the berthed boats

Take your pick, its Government looking after us the best they know how. Couldn't organise a root in a whore house. The alert system has zero credibility. This was an eruption, not a quake, so probably didn't fit within any models or SOP's etc, but if Tonga had Tsunami, well, hmmm. I would have thought the best option would have been to issue an alert for an 'unspecified threat', i.e. 'something has happened, we don't know the threat, be aware'.

A root in a whorehouse doesn't really need organising, that's the problem, the government would still try to organise it and fuck it up.
