Trailer yacht guy is a great guy . I had the pleasure of meeting him and his family during the Donald hay memorial on lake wakatipu in may . Sadly even though the boat is probably worth that much it will be very hard to sell . the sistership to my old boat which was a 7.5 metre sport boat cost 120k to build . It sold for 38k and had hardly been used and was in near new condition

Yip the comments page say it all ...albeit a bit OTT What did that 8m dickson TY sell for? Yep the sad slow death of yacht building and designing in NZ . I know of 3 race boats being built , well 4 actually 3 are self builds by boatbuilders for themselves , 1 is professional built but a TY . 3 of them are Dibleys and one is an Elliott . All of the dibleys are freaking cool and the Elliot is very nice . hopefully there’s more boats after these ones . no idea what the son of dick sold for but i vaguely remember an asking price of 70k ?

They look to be in completely different condition. JJ looks tired and in need of a repaint & probably a full refit. Celedon looks good. Is / was owned by Richard Macalaister, owner of Kiwi Yachting, so I would assume it has all the bells and whistles and maintained to a high standard, considering he could get everything at cost. Noting I haven't read the blurbs. The cost of a refit on a boat of that size / pedigree could explain the cost difference. The other factor to bear in mind is that just because a boat is listed for sale doesn't mean the owner wants to sell it. I'm not saying that is the case here, but it is a common thing. Divorce is the most common reason for this. Either that or at a lower level, martial disharmony. She wants the boat gone, he wants to keep it, so agrees to put it on the market, but makes it look at shit as possible so they either can't sell it, or any price offered is BS, and he can turn around and say 'we may as well keep it for that much...' That is what I think when I see boats that are listed with very poor photos. Junk left in all the photos. A good clew is rubbish or dishes in the photos. Unmade bunks, stuff like that.

Quite easy. JJ has a 3.6m draft which will makes it questionable as a South Pacific tourer. Most of the other tourers have lifting keels. It also needs a full repaint and hasn't been used or had much love for quite a while. Bones are good but to get it up to the condition of the other is going to cost big bucks.

Noting I haven't read the blurbs. Celadon has been on the market for 5-6 yrs now, with her price slowly spiralling downwards. Notwithstanding her pedigree (good build, good fitout altho a bit "austere" down below) she is now seen as an "old" boat by many people with that sort of money to spend, they would rather look at a new bendy boat or a catamaran. There was also a red Elliott tourer built by one of the Salthouses that was on the market for years, don't know if that has sold The other big issue impacting on the sale of these yachts and other such as that big Beale "Riva" is berthitis, ie finding an 18m marina berth to park it. If you can find one, the cost in some locations is greater than the cost of the boat.

The Thompson 38 titanium is really good value if that’s what you are into and I would buy it if I didn’t have a wife . If I was 10 years older I would be keen on the bakewell-white 38 Vis it seems like good value and a pretty solid boat .

Forgive me for saying this but I find the Elliot tourer interiors a bit naff with the spray painted cabinetry in metallic colours etc …all a bit 90s early 2000s chintz

I agree. Especially for such big bucks you’re up against some really stiff competition not just the newest interior designs but some proven older classics.
But it’s the cockpit of those Elliots that would make me cry. Just drawn with a ruler and lacking any aesthetic.
