The last estimate I saw said that each cruise ship that berthed in Auckland dumped average of $1m into the downtown economy from big-walleted tourists. That was for just 1 day ie for the ships that arrived at dawn and departed at dinner time. That spend has got to be welcomed by the NZ hospitality and retail sectors. And whilst it’s seasonal the demand peaks are highly predictable with each ship’s arrival date & time known way in advance. And ah , have you tried spear fishing in the med ? You can’t have a vibrant cruise ship industry and good spear fishing

Does anyone know what happened to the floating dock at Westhaven?
The basic economics of demand and supply would say that more services would come into the market for providing hull cleaning, oh, and the price will go up. That is of course dependent on barriers to entry like permits, resource consents and the capital to get an operation underway. Clearly suitable waterfront land is like rocking horse shit, but water based operations like the floating dock avoid that issue.

floating dock is still there and well used My mistake, I thought it had closed. I seem to remember it had to move once or twice? It is facilities like the floating dock we need more of. From an infrastructure point of view it is very efficient with space and straight forward to get the waste water captured, through compliant filtration systems and into the town wastewater network. Strewth, with the appropriate filtration systems, they may even be able to discharge water into the water (marina environment). Has to have the same or lower operating cost than travel lifts, excluding the hardstand and piers that travel lifts need.
