Is it me or does the wind seem to be consistently 5-10kts higher than the forecast for the last 2-3 weeks?
If I recall this seems to be a pattern at this time of year?
Is the weather (wind) just harder to forecast in early summer or is it because they senior meteos are on holiday and the interns are left issuing the forecasts?

You could be reading Knots on Windy as KMH?

You could be reading Knots on Windy as KMH? I’m looking at knots everywhere. Just had a beer with some experienced sailing friends - who avoid going out at peak times - and they agree. In fact they also have a runabout for fishing for when sailing days no good and they agreed it’s been 5-10kts over forecast for the last 6 weeks (both NE and SW).

all I can add is the strong wind warning for the Bream Head to Cape Colville area for the last few days has been entirely accurate as far as the Barrier has been concerned - been honking out here the last few days!

The same sailing friends had a retired ex Metservice friend who admitted that between Labour weekend and Easter they err on the side of caution with the marine forecast given they know there will be a large number of small boats out around Auckland / Northland.
But this seems to be the other way around ie regularly under-forecasting wind strength by about 30-50% for the last 4-6 weeks eg a 20kts forecast regularly turning out to be blowing steady 30kts.
Next time I see it I’ll post example…

Long ago quit NIWA forecasts. Hugely unreliable ,except they usually get night & day right, NIWA just bought a new computer so that will be good .Yeah right. It'll date me a bit but remember the days when the lighthouse keepers looked up in the sky? One on Cuvier in the 80's was a cracker plus if he said it was blowing in the Colville Channel,it was. Alongside Channel one night with now cast broadcasting 20 / 25 as we ambled by in a lovely 10 / 12. Yep ..technology is a great help ?

Talking of wind nobody has mentioned this depression off the Queensland coast but it looks like it has potential to cause some mischief in a few days time?

If you play it out in windy it's not going anywhere . The one out east is doing bugger all. If you want accurate wind use the "reported wind " option in menu settings. This is Thursday 1pm.

Says it is bucketing down and the low is expected to move west which means it will turn into a rain bearing depression and dump big time on QLD, so they are expecting lots of flooding
