i learned to swim at a 30 student country primary school taught daily over summer by 1 of the 2 teachers until i could swim 50mtr? crawl it was a small pool the local farmers made with tractors, chicken wire and concrete that basis allowed me to perfect the stroke by myself in 50mtr pool until boredom was the only limit to the distance
eventually i was teaching english primary school children how to swim as the private owner said, "swimming is the 'sport' with the most likely chance of saving your life" my old primary school pool was closed years ago, as even thought the school roll had risen to 100? 'costs' were too high..... .but it was really the overbearing legislation
the farmers weren't 'qualified' and so not allowed to fix the cracks and anyway the teacher was no longer 'qualified' to teach swimming and presumably i wouldn't be allowed to teach swimming now as i'm 'unqualified' last i heard the kids at my old primary were bussed into town once a week for some water play and kick-boarding at the council pool is that enough to save their lives? probably not:o( over-legislation killing people and good ideas since gov. was invented in 2018 stuff said"In the past five years, about 165 school pools have closed and about 135 are at risk of closing because of health and safety, or maintenance costs."www.stuff.co.nz/national/108865993/costly-price-for-new-zealand-children-led-down-path-of-inadequate-water-skillshave more people drowned this year than died of covid?

The stats are all screwed up because the focus is on some actual swimming type drownings, but while also included are drownings for other non swimming reasons. One is a Woman that I don't think should even be included in the Drowning stats at all.
I know that two of the Drownings are of refugees that could not swim and got into trouble in the river current. The Public response now is to force the Council to put up signs and stop people swimging there because it is considered dangerous (if I understand the news on that correctly). I guess the next course of action will be Authorities toughening up on Pool laws again. We probably won't be allowed to have water in the pool soon.

7 people drowned last month, as such The Prime minister has announced that as of midnight tonight all water activities will be locked down, oceans and rivers will be controlled by iwi, pools will be emptied, and baths removed.Any sailors returning from overseas will have to "hove to" offshore awaiting selection via the ," returnee ballot system" Anybody caught leaving home without " without inflatable arm bands" will be fined.
The government is in conversations with authorities regarding ordering and mandating the compulsory use of ,"drowning prevention devices" (DPDs).These will have to be worn whenever closer contact with water is encounted.
Finally, lockdown will continue until all regions have 90+% uptake of DPDs. Once 90% DPD is reached we will all go into a 3 blasts alert system as follows ..
1 blast - full ahead with usual freedoms except vulnerable non swimmers, as identified by the national swimming register, Will be banned from being within 500M of the coast and large bodies of water over 50 litres.
2 blasts - some freedoms such as quick showers But that's it. All restrictions as per "3 blasts " apply excluding Auckland, who will remain in in " 3 blasts" due to more people traditionally swimming.
3 blasts - full lockdown with everybody remaining in thier house until we have 34 weeks of zero drownings

A number of years ago a toddler walked several miles to a house that had a pool, owner came to find the child dead. How can that be the owners fault??where were the parent/s.That was in Glenfield late 70s.
We were taught to swim at primary school(Devonport) then at the beach, could sail my "P" until I could swim 50m
Drownings at Piha, why would you go there after the TV shows?? Think G030 may of been with me and a few others at Muriwai.Knee deep next minute wheres the bottom and struggled to swim back.Never been since

the main cause of death in this year's car accidents seems to be
not wearing seat-belts.....
...
- people who; don't wear seat-belts, distracted by the phones, or drunk, dying in car crashes
- people who can't swim, drowning
- 10 recent covid cases, linked to brothel
labour's tail-wag-the-dog just stops all progress, and leaves all of us worse off
...
A man critically injured in a school pool in Masterton in the early hours of Monday morning has died.
Police said the 58-year-old man has died in Wellington Hospital following the incident at St Matthew’s Collegiate earlier this week.
...
death-by-misadventure shouldn't result in 99% of us losing our freedoms
because you can't outlaw stupid!

I didn't realise it was a River Bar. That makes it even worse of a place to be. I saw the surf on the news and instantly said to wife, why on earth did the skipper bring such a small boat into that ruff stuff. He should never have been there. There is no way a boat that small could get into the beach with surf that size.

Tairua entrance is OK if you stick to Paku Point ,close in. The surf on TV is rolling up on Pauanui beach. However it also pays to know what you're doing. Apparently a newbie ,just bought the boat if the news was correct

Apparently a newbie ,just bought the boat if the news was correct The basic rule with that bar is you do not go out if there is any sort of an easterly swell running. Swell forecast was 1.5 - 2m last couple of days

Does anyone know any more to this story now. I was told this morning that there were two Kayakers in trouble and the boat skipper was asked to go back out into that Sea to help them. Apparently it all went wrong and the Kayakers weren't actually in trouble and now the guy that asked the skipper to go out in that feels real bad about it all. I don't blame that guy. The Skipper should have said no, or at least unloaded the Kids. I also hear that the Skipper has died. That's sad. But it could also have been worse.
