Sadly, two People I know have recently died. The first one is just a Person I know. But it is possible that for anyone here that has Marlborough connectiosn to Boating, they may well know the Person. Loyd Own died last Week. 81, so a pretty good innings. But what is really interesting is the both Loyd and his Brother Hugh, still work. Hugh is ruffly 78-79. They are Marine Sparkies and I would often seem them in their Van troddling off to Picton of Havelock each day to work on a Boat. Loyd and Hugh both had the opinion they would never retire, but die with their Boots on. Both awesome Kiwi blokes and a couple of real hard cases.
The real sad one though, was a good friend. I wasn't going to post this, as I had been waiting for an official comment to be made on Crew. The owner had been made aware of the Death by G030 since back between Xmas and NY. But I have not seen anything.
You may remember a Crew member by the handle of "Rigger". His real name being Troy.
Originally and when I first met him, he was living in Auckland and was one of the Skippers of a Tug for the Ports of Auckland.
He later moved to Tauranga and operated one of the Tugs there before becoming a Ships Pilot, bringing the Vessels in and out of Tauranga. He would often send me a picture of one of the huge vessels he navigated in or out.
When Troy was in Auckland, he was diagnosed with Lukemia. But after treatment, he was in remission. In Tauranga, he started to get the tremors from Parkensons. But he did not let that get the better of him and continued to work as normal.
I haven't been able to find out if it was a relapse of Lukemia or something else he had died of. If anyone knows, I would like to hear.
We talked by Phone often and it was my turn to call him. But due to the sillyness of the last 2yrs, when I would remember and think "must give him a call", I would be too busy. And of course, when I had time, I would forget. I regret that now. It's good to keep in touch with friends, especially as many of us get older.
