Interesting article on the sinking of the Berserk in the Ross sea. 3 theories put as to why the boat left the bay into a storm. Something that is really peculiar. The leader took all of the existing footage with him on the attempt to quad bike to the South Pole. Surely, if you have a yacht as support, you would leave anything behind that didn't add to your chances of success getting to pole? Unless you thought you would loose the yacht? interactives.stuff.co.nz/2022/01/the-berserk-incident/

yeah remember that and read the article this am. It was all a bit Errrr?? at the time. I struggle a bit to think the grey boat told them to bugger off but maybe they gad words and the yachts crew thought they did or maybe they thought fuck you.
I remember thinking when the pair came back to NZ for a second go they seemed a little to Ho Hum about their 3 mates not making it back...not to mention them heading back again in what looked very 1/2 arsed.
I wonder if anyone does know what really happened?

they'll eventually find it on the bottom somewhere but they'll probably never know why they left shelter Two of the more knowledgeable people spoken to in that article say the Bay was hopeless, it was exposed to the south, where the storm was coming from, and highly likely to have ice pile into it and crush the boat. Hence, it is most likely they left that bay because it was going to be untenable during the storm. That old saying, safer in high seas than anywhere near solids bits in a storm. The two knowledgeable people were the Watson guy from Sea Shepperd, who used the ships helicopter to search for 14 hours, and some kiwi guy who has been running guided tours of Antarctica for 30 years or something. He was on the Spirit of Enderby, who was also involved in the search. I don't know much about the particular geography down there, but bays are normally only good for certain wind directions. Add in the issue of ice, and it is easily conceivable that the bay would be untenable and they needed to either change bays, or get into open ocean and outrun or ride out the storm.

Didn't that muppet they dragged up for the 2nd trip down try to claim refugee status or something equally silly at some stage. That seemed weird considering he was, is??, a Maori. Had a weird name, more along the lines of what you'd expect from some pommie landed gentry than a Bro from Manukau.

Wanted to plant the Tinorangiteriatunga flag on Antarctica and claim it as ancestral homeland, or some other such obscure thing to do with planting the flag and claiming it. I've never met the guy, and wouldn't want to be judgemental (but will anyway). Sounds like he had a personality disorder, or some mental health issues. Didn't take a rain coat, apparently stowed away unnoticed in the 15m boat (!?) etc. At the least he is prone to impulsive decisions.
