Yes the reviews I’ve seen say similar. It was a bold attempt to replicate the old Defender - Ratcliffe tried to buy the design from LR after the culled it - but it looks like it’s going to be a big complicated fail.
A missed opportunity to fill a gap in the market - a retro style throwback to the old Defender that is simple but also comfortable and reliable. And instead of using modern tech to mirror the features of a new LR use modern tech to make a simple car reliable.
Also the price is a problem - more expensive than LR.
Remember
Under all the current EU/US and other countries regulation, particularly safety and emissions, the desire to be "simple" in the vein of the original Defender (or the Patrol/LC I previously mentioned) is just not possible. The other issue is the target market has an expectation for all the bells and whistles, so at the end of the day they have really built a competitor for the latest Defender model with a retro body and more off road orientated suspension.
I fully understand their going for "crate" engine/ gearbox packages from BMW/ZF as they are already certified and do not have any development cost, same with the Dana axles. To be fair the BMW B58 (Petrol) and B57 (diesel) are quite well regarded, could just be better if they did not use so much plastic for things like valve covers and cooling components. In an ideal world I would prefer a naturally aspirated petrol engine, something like the now defunct Ford 4.0L Barra (Falcon/Territory) which is as tough as old boots (tuners are getting up to 1500kW out of them!), good torque and an uncomplicated engine, but it would not pass latest Euro emissions requirements.
Hopefully the electrical system has not been designed by someone who did their apprenticeship with Joseph Lucas.
Will be interesting to see how durable they are after a couple of years.
