Southern Man on that other forum has done it several times I believe.
My basic understanding is that you would want a boat set up for Fiordland capability. Not quiet Southern Ocean, but certainly open ocean.
It is certainly do-able. But far easier, cheaper and quicker to fly there...

Not crazy just need to plan well about staying out there, space is limited and it the weather gods go evil it can be tricky.
But no reason not to give it a crack, I've strongly considered popping out for a suss via sail.
