Ok I pay annual membership + a monthly top up.
Last night got a call asking if I could top up my top up.Unfortunatly NO.
It appears they are short of $75 per rescue.
Lotto gave the some $$ and they recieved for free 1 or 2 ex Americas cup chase vessels.
So my question is,Should C/G raise from $115 to $150??
Should be funded by Government.( yeah can where that will go)why am I funding rich pricks to be rescued??
Do we start paying a licence fee and certs for vessels to help reduce cost/recues?

The problem goes back a few years ago when I think it was "Sea Tow" was looking at establishing a commercial towing service on the same model they have overseas. Coastguard saw this as competition and used the lure of unlimited tows as a lure to sign people up. Now it looks like it is biting them on the RS. I believe something like 90% of their "rescues" are of the flat battery/running out of fuel nature, which in most other countries would be handled by commercial providers. So an answer is to limit rescues to say 2 per year for a member and after that you pay an hourly rate. Don't want to pay, well you can get deposited in the nearest safe bay and organise a tow home. Other issue Coastguard have is their ever growing overhead thanks to the empire building going on there.

I'd reckon 1 rescue for flat/battery /fuel. If that doesn't teach you something about preparedness then you should pay. Just like a fine except you get something for it. Maybe your life !

I wonder how much they actually recover from non-members? They maybe short $ overall, but what is the rescue split between members/non-members?
I have been a member for almost 20 years. One tow back due to a burst cooling water pipe. I also made a donation because of that about equal to what they told me their fuel bill was (tow from just outside Coromandel back to Westhaven).

I thought the standard membership covers 2x free tow-homes per year - which seems overly generous actually.

Back up the Truck! The ambulance service is completely stuffed. Massive delays for status one calls. Having to fly staff up from SI to cover Auckland weekends etc etc, and you want to govt to fund the CG to tow home wealthy boat owners who don't know how to use a fuel gauge? NO! Coastguard is 95% a breakdown service. Seatow could cover almost all of CG's operation, easily 80% of calls, especially in the Hauraki Gulf. Seatow works very well alongside the RLNI in the UK. Fogg has it covered, "oh, we are going to run a surplus, quick, buy something new". All CG gear is incredibly well spec'ed, and in many instances over spec'ed. They are not short of capital equipment. The volunteers do a tremendous job, including weekly training along with being on call. That all said, I think my $115 / year membership is very good value, and am a bit surprised it hasn't gone up yet. Don't forget, when we bought our boat, CG were using private launches for rescues. "Kairama?" Our boat has been in the family 20 yrs now, so in 20 yrs CG have tooled up exceptionally well. My understanding, from a CG volunteer, is that there are so many CG boats in the Gulf, they race each other to callouts, just so they can get something fun to do...

The coastguard need to sort thier resources and people out.
In many rescues a near by boat saves the day we'll before the coastguard sort thier sorry arses out.
The volunteers are great but they waste money by being disorganized.
What happens to the extra fuel tax the steal from boaties?.
Where do the police and coastguard cross over.
Coastguard don't rescue that many rich pricks compared to poor pricks in Runabouts with nothing but a few rods and cans of beer.

The term Rich pricks is what the non boating deem people with boats, dinghy to maxi. If Coastguard was fully funded by Govt you can just hear them whinging ,F n rich prick. Do I moan about the amount of sportsfields around the council/govt pay for.No because if I choose I can use such facilities.

CG are the beneficences of some 'creative accounting' around the AC to hide the rwal amount the taxpayers put in to it.
Basically Dalts said 'gimme more money', Govt said 'Hell no that's a very poor look', so CG was given the money to buy a pile of RIBs, the very RIBS you saw smothering the harbour during the AC. Now Dalts has finished with them they are being retasked into CG boats.
Retasked as the AC event didn't want to spend the money on gear so they went out pretty minimal, certainly not up the the grade you'd expect a sensible boater or a rescue service to have.
