So if the "hidden" one is broadcasting can you narrow it down by turning off DC circuits and see when it stops? At least then you could try and trace some wires? I assume the electrician would have done this? Unfortunately it’s attached the the “Navigation instruments” switch which seems to power about a million devices onboard. The wiring goes from the switch into a loom and then branches all over. Yes he’s tried using a wire detector but still not found after 4hrs searching. I’m going to join him tomorrow for a fresh effort - might pull down some roof linings… Any success? Do you have the factory manual? These have detailed wiring diagrams and it may give you/Matt and idea of which cable is powering the AIS If not, have you asked the Jeanneau factory? If the power supply is in the main wiring loom then they should be able to provide an idea of where the cable run terminates

Another few hours today (3 of us searching) but no joy.
Studied the detailed factory wiring diagrams but non the wiser.
Starting to run out of places to look now. 😳

Has anyone got any ideas on using a very sensitive instrument to try to detect either the small current draw from the hidden unit or it’s intermittent VHF transmission - so we can sort of direction-find it to narrow down location on the boat?

I've actually met him before (he helped me a couple of years ago with some strange new behaviour from my Vesper AIS unit following a software upgrade). one other thought pondering this mystery - I wonder if this AIS transceiver was installed as a security tracker in case of theft, hence it being so well concealed. Might be worthwhile checking with the previous owner and/or Jeanneau agent in Malaysia to see if they can throw any light on it.

Sorry I thought I had mentioned that earlier - yes that’s exactly what we think has happened. In other breaking news…. I’ve just exchanged an email with the first / original owner (after desperately tracking down all the possible French bankers in Asia and guessing a few email addresses etc)…. so I have initial comms but now I’m waiting for a reply to my big question… I’m hoping he knows where it is and didn’t just pay a marine electrician to do it and never asked where it was installed. Waiting with baited breath 😳

… OK so the nice helpful original owner answered my question as best he could to confirm yes secret AIS was installed but no he cannot remember exact location - but that it’s hidden on the port side somewhere between the chart table and the saloon seat backs.
Hopefully this enables us to focus our search enough to find it quickly now!

Yes we found it!!!! Or to be fair Matt (Neptune’s Gear) found it. 🙏🏼 Was really well hidden complete with its own GPS antenna, mini VHF antenna and power supply. Just enough power to cause a problem for a potential thief or huge confusion for a perplexed new owner. See pics of the little bugger:

It was hidden under the roof lining under the deck on the outer port side behind / above the chart table area.
When this hidden unit was installed as an anti-theft device the boat was located in Thailand but registered in the Cook Islands. Original name Tin Tin then renamed Fogg but registration in CIYS continued until I bought her last year and imported her into NZ - and registered her here.
I’m now partly regretting that decision and deciding whether it’s easier to change the port of registration painted on the stern or register back in CI again!
Regardless of registration, I wanted to 2nd AIS unit found and removed so I have just the one for Fogg.
The Raymarine AIS unit we found is being reset by Matt and I’ll probably just sell it - as it’s a perfectly functioning Class B unit (complete with instruction manual which we found as well)!
