Some big shit went down in Christchurch. Seems so long ago, but also just like yesterday.

Noting I work in infrastructure, and was familiar with Chch systems having done recent projects on them prior to 22nd Feb 2011. The below is a summary of my story.
Tomorrow morning 11 years ago: Phone call before dawn "Can you get to RNZAF Base Whenuapai within 2 hrs?" Fish - "Sure, where are we going?" Caller -"Christchurch" Fish - "How long for?" Caller - "Don't know" Fish - "Where are we staying?" Caller - "Don't know" Fish - "What do I need to bring?" Caller - "Don't know" Fish - "What are we going to do" Caller - "Don't know"
We found a Civil Defense Controller on the flight, but immediately lost them at the Air Movements terminal. So we took a taxi into the city, blagged our way through a Police checkpoint and reported to Response HQ at the Council Building - where we promptly got told to fuck off - they had a bit on their plate and weren't interested in a crack team of water engineers.
We then commandeered the bosses car and headed out to where all pipes lead to, the Bromley Wastewater Treatment Plant. We promptly set to work from dawn till dusk assessing the damage to lifeline utilities (water & wastewater in our case) and directing repair gangs into the easy fixes to get safe drinking water back on and raw wastewater off the streets, so as to protect public health.
Big ups to my mate and his wife who gave up their whole house to a rag tag bunch of engineers who literally turned up on their doorstep unannounced, all while nursing a new born baby boy. You were absolute stars. After 10 days on the ground initially, I got home completely rooted to find out that apparently we were part of Auckland Council's Civil Defense team response. There you go.

Damn its hard to attach photos. Is there an easy way to automatically reduce the file size so they can be uploaded?
