England is a cold and damp place without home heating. Let alone Scotland. people forget just how far north the UK is - London's latitude is 51N, and it is in the lower part of the country. 18 months ago we rode into Durness, the very top left hand corner of Scotland. It is 1000km closer to the north pole than Bluff is to the South pole.
So we were loaded with thermals and looking forward to seeing huge waves, icebergs and polar bears smashing into the northern cliffs.
What we found was bright sun, fecking hot, Palm tress, golden sandy beached including 2 hot chicks in bikinis. So warm I thought I'd go for a swim..........by the time the knees got wet I realised the iceburgs must have been just around the headlands, the swim stop right at that moment.
Putin is looking too calm, is that marketing or is there a cunning plan about to pop up?

Is Durness the site of one of the UK's nuclear power plants?
You have to watch the Scot's, there all a little bit mad. The two hot chicks in bikini's were just a decoy, Scot's think a heat wave is a high of 5 deg.
I once worked for a Scottish company. I was based at one of their plants in Wiltshire. They flew me up to Innverness to see if they could get me to move there and work, at the start of winter... Reckoned they all went to watch their local football team on Saturday's, and if you wore enough blankets, you wouldn't get frostbite in the open air grandstand.
Most of the Innverness plant was staffed by Ukrainians. They were happy with the cold and repetitive work (processing fish). The Technical Manager could speak something like 15 languages, so did all the H&S and job training stuff in the native language.
The HR manager (male) was banging the Technical Manager (female), so they would come for regular business trips to our plant in Wiltshire, for no real reason. They never wanted us to join them at their hotel for dinner, which we initially thought was a bit odd, but then it got to the point their shagging was so common knowledge they stopped booking 2 rooms to save the company some money, I think so the CEO wouldn't crack down on their once a month 'business trips' to our plant.
That HR Manager was a legend (and not just because the Technical Manager was tidy). I was chatting to him about sailing, and he just casually drops in that he had sailed a replica of the James Caird from Elephant Island to South Georgia. I tried calling bullshit on him, but he was just that right level of 'mad as a chook' Scottish that it was true. He was ex navy and reckoned it was a 'training exercise'. They had a Royal Navy frigate monitoring them the whole way, from just below the horizon, but they didn't know that until after they got to South Georgia, apparently.

Drifting off a bit, you reckon the Scot's can handle the cold, well they found the Canadian cold too much for them, and that's how the "Novies" finished up settling in Waipu www.waipumuseum.com/genealogy/migration-map/

Is Durness the site of one of the UK's nuclear power plants? You have to watch the Scot's, there all a little bit mad. The two hot chicks in bikini's were just a decoy, Scot's think a heat wave is a high of 5 deg. Close but not quite even though it is called the Durness plant. It's 50 odd km eastward towards John O Groats, the very top right hand corner of Scotland. It's a early experimental reactor that has now been shut down and being dismantled. It was placed there by the pollies as it is as far from the House of Commons they could get. It's neighbour is the UK's Nuke Sub repairing facility so it's also got glow in the dark shit going on.
It was funny as we rode from Durness across the top road, an awesome road for bikes and scenic as hell, and as we did waves of the Scottish Mist was rolling thru so at time vis dropped to feck all. At one stage we spotted windmils popping out the top of the fog so when close pulled in for a good close look. While sussing the wind mills the fog cleared and bamm, there were the 2 nuke plants next door to the wind farm. All a little WTF with wind and Nuke being side by side.
We rode on to John o Groats to spend the night in the local pub that had 4 pages of Gin options on it's drinks list. I started on the list as sky news was showing some carnage involving boats. It took me a couple of gins to realise the carnage was the tornado that ripped thru Westhaven and down the harbour.
It was a stinking hot day even by our standard and they worn the bikinis very well But the water, as blue and sparkling as it was, must have been about 5 degrees, twas frecking cold.

What’s it going to do? Deliver drinking water and toilet paper to crisis zones (like most of NZDF seems to do)?

What’s it going to do? Deliver drinking water and toilet paper to crisis zones (like most of NZDF seems to do)? Its not even allowed to fly near the crisis zone. Wont enter Ukraine. Its going to be based in Germany at a logistics hub, and shift donated military aid around Europe. Meanwhile, the Aussies have sent 20 Bushmaster armoured troop vehicles (that Ukraine already operate, and love), delivered overnight in a RAAF Globemaster. We sent them some old, heavy body armour (instead of our new good stuff). I guess setting up as a courier / freight forwarding business is better than nothing. Something about Labour not wanting to send lethal aid. Oh, and who are Labour's coalition partners? the Greens are philosophically opposed to sending lethal aid. How do you help out in a war, where civilians are dieing on a daily basis, without lethal aid? Fucking Embarrassing. Apparently we are going to have the good grace to let them buy bullets with some of the cash we are sending this time...

1965? c130H hercules, older than virtually everyone who flies or works on it...................but still a good plane..even if a 'token gesture'
will presumably be flying; weapons?, ammo?, our blankets + helmets, from various bases...mainly UK?
to a polish? base near the ukrainian border
where they can be trucked across at night under cloudy skies
...
joke doing the rounds
Russian wife & husband are talking:
W: What's this "special military operation"?
H: It's a proxy war - Russia vs. NATO.
W: How's it going?
H: We've lost 15,000 troops, 8 generals, 500 tanks and 100 planes.
W: Wow. What about NATO?
H: They haven't shown up yet.

I'm not sure if I should put this here or in the Greens thread... Greens saying we shouldn't help Ukraine with lethal aid. Save them with toilet paper! He said the Green Party's call for the entire $13m to be spent on humanitarian relief was "complete nonsense". "Of course we want humanitarian assistance to go to so many people who are displaced ... the fact is now they are under attack, massive attack, and we're seeing that every night on our television screens. I'd ask the question, who wouldn't want to help people in that circumstance?" www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/465108/greens-ukraine-weapons-fund-should-be-humanitarian-relief

the problem with the left is their adherence "party doctrine'
pretty much affects everything they do
often they are relieved when they are ignored by 'the people'
and power is taken out of their hands and the 'other party' enact practical/realistic actions
of course it stings
but not as much as dropping unworkable, long cherished party dogma while they are in power
only when they are in opposition can this quietly be done
