so i wonder if comrade jacinda realises how putin's 3rd? and biggest invasion in 10? years will impact the world's security over the next 20? years
she'll need to stop focusing on the evil americans and start worrying about the evil russian and chinese empire builders
nz will need to increase its defence spending, forget about the 'peace-dividend' funding all our nice-to-haves but not essentials and learn to plug in militarily and policy wise with a re-arming euro, uk, oz and usa
or in 50? years we'll be a chinese vassal state modelled on hong kong
nice one labour
how many balls can you drop on 1 watch?
only 1 team can secure our future, and it's not a bunch of lying, incapable socialists

Your bashing of Jacinda is surprising.
You must hold her in really high regard if you think she's capable of single handledly knowing the outcome of all the things NZ is dealing with in the world and how to react.
I think it would be wise to lower your expectations of her, or even cabinet as a whole.
They don't know what's going to happen they don't understand all the intracasies of everything that happening.
They rely on experts like you to give them knowledge and direction.
Out of interest which department do you think would be responsible for advising cabinet on what action they should of taken leading up to this invasion? Nzsis? Mfat?

Former prime minister Jim Bolger is fearful Russian President Vladimir Putin will try to invade other former Soviet states after Ukraine, in an attempt to restore the Soviet Union.
Bolger, who was prime minister as the Soviet Union fell in 1991, said the Russian invasion of Ukraine was a disaster, and these were "frightening days".
Bolger said Putin was likely emboldened by Russia's annexation of the Crimea Peninsula in 2014.
"I surmise from his perspective that didn't cost him much, so he's trying again," Bolger said.
"I wouldn't be at all surprised if his ambition was to try recreate the old Soviet Empire. Of course that means a number of other much smaller republics than the Ukraine must be fearful of what Putin might decide to do on their borders. This is what makes this so dangerous.
"If this naked attempt to take over another country is successful, why would Putin stop there?"

If he keeps going that could be quite catastrophic for the world. If the west interferes that could be equally catastrophic.
I can't see that other countries can do anything except sit back and watch. What are the other options?
If NATO started defending Ukraine would Russia follow through with its threat and unleash a response the world has never seen before?
Blocking SWIFT transactions is a double-edged sword, SWIFT is a monopolistic economy controlling dinosaur that needs to go. If blocked from SWIFT, Russia would figure out a way around it along with China who also sees SWIFT as a threat. And then SWIFT would lose it's control.
Blocking SWIFT is a bit like Nuclear Weapons, it's a threat that, if you use, you also lose.

Mfat? stating the stupidity if her spin and actions ( or lack thereof) is not bashing her. We don't need to bash Ardern! She's dΓ³ing a great job herself. Never in the history of NZ has this country been so divided... That's thanks to no one but Ardern herself... Led racially by the Maori caucus.

Never in the history of NZ has this country been so divided... That's thanks to no one but Ardern herself... Led racially by the Maori caucus. In the history of NZ might be a slight exaggeration... I think we have been split more before.... The number of people rocking up daily to get booster shots, is a bucket compared to the drop of people camped at parliament. We have the highest vaccination rates in the world - over 94% of over 12yo are fully vaccinated There was a horizon poll a few days ago that showed 30% of people support the occupation, 60% opposed it and 10% refused to say. Another poll was published last Sunday that showed 25% thought the RED Restrictions were not strict enough and should be tougher, 50% thought they were just about right and 25% thought they were inappropriate and went too far. So 75% thought they were good enough or needed to be better. 164 police staff and 115 NZDF staff subject to the Unlawful Order is very small compared to the overall workforce of over 15,000 for each of the police and NZDF Most recently we were more split as a country over the issue of legalizing marijuna - that was like 52% <> 48% iirc!?! The Waterfront dispute in the 1950's involved more than 25000 workers when we only had a population of 2Million that lasted 150 days - that was all about returning rights taken away by wwii The springbok tour lasted 50days and over 150,000 took place... How split were we over the flag? I can't even remember it... must of been irrelevant So no, not the most divided ever - in my opinion... I would however concede that if the current trajectory continues, the divide will get bigger and probably eclipse anything else we have ever seen, but we are not there yet. And lets face it, the rules will be eased well before that divide become irreversible. We've already seen close-contact rules change, testing rules have changed, vaccination mandates in schools have changed - as Omicron spreads the mandates will get dropped one by one - long before the divide appears.

I hear Putin has received Nanaia Mahuta's strongly worded letter on behalf of the NZ Government.
Vlad is reported to have read it and was then seen asking google 'What is a New Zealand and does anyone care?'

Mfat? my point isn't that they should have known or done anything in the pastbut that this is a MAJOR geopolitical shift and that they will have to do SOMETHINGs in the future things that will go against the grain for a labour/green alliance, esp. when the green co-leader has come out with a response so weak even neville chamberlain would have blushed imho they need to take nz back to being a full member of the 5-eyes finish the planned military upgrades and then work-as-part of the team to contain their democracy hating, empire building old-socialist mates i have a piece of paper from putin!
he promises not to invade; georgia, crimea, eastern-ukraine, ukraine, lithuania, latvia, estonia, poland

It came as Russia warned Finland and Sweden of "military consequences" if they joined Nato, amid growing support for the move in the Nordic nations.
