That is becoming more common with modern boats requiring bigger berths than what their length requires. We rent our 10m berth from someone who purchased a Pogo 30. Too wide to fit the 10m so had to go to a 12m berth.

Romanza, V5, Vixen and now Charmonet back in Westhaven. Thank god for the tracker because the Squadron efforts on this race is woeful. The dedicated Facebook page had a flurry of activity in July last year promoting boats that aren't sailing and nothing since November. The race webpage does nothing but direct you to the Facebook page for updates
A sad indication of both the state of offshore NZ keelboat racing and the biggest club in NZ's inability to promote their biggest race in years. No wonder the cups gone to Spain
Have all the good people at Squadron left? Like the Auckland Regatta shambles, a yacht club that has turned its back on sailing.

On a serious note .. if YNZ got thier head out of thier arse and spent its millions on club / sailing promotion instead of a few rich Olympic hopefulls and corporate largesse, they would be honourable to the sport.
About time Sport NZ stopped funding the sport and YNZ had to solely rely on club membership numbers for income.... That would sort thier priorities out.

Why would those 4 boats pull out? Worried it's going to be a drifter? Last time they did this race, didn't a little Townson 32 win overall? Complete drifter, so the boat with the lowest handicap (sailed well) wins. I've been waiting for a race like this to take a major trophy with my PHRF of .735 - patients, perservance and tenacity can win a major trophy. Has worked for the fastnet on occassion. Most boats just want an epic send, which is fun, but not all of what yacht racing is about. If you want an epic send, get a wind-foiler for the half the cost of a new FRO, and knock yourself out. I'm basically too embarrassed to enter the Gold Cup now with my 40 yr old Kauri log and dacron sails. Everyone has black sails, square tops and prods like a Volvo 60.

From FB Unfortunately 5 yachts have had to retire from the race - V5 has had to pull out due to engine issues at the start line - Vixen came into trouble off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, and managed to make their way back to Gulf Harbour Marina - Charmonet's rudder bearings came loose overnight off Little Barrier Island and have returned to Westhaven Marina - Legacy has broken their backstay, and are currently on their way back from the Bay of Islands. - They are joined on their way home by Rum Bucket, who are currently turning around off Whangaroa Harbour.
