The benefit of beacons far outweigh the minor issue of the odd false alarm. We've been told ad nauseum to get a beacon (or two forms of communication, etc), so, now everyone has got one. Farmers and other remote lone workers are at the biggest risk of injury, and have the biggest benefit from beacons, so the guy in the story is a good example.
The story looked more like a PR piece to get people to register their beacons, which is fair enough really.

except when I tried to register my new beacon their website would not let me. I ended up having to call them
