yeah, China are finding their 1 child policy has worked out really well aren't they. Then there is Japan, which I appreciate you are quite knowledgeable about, with forecasts that the population could drop 30% in the next generation. However there is a nice story, which I do not vouch for its accuracy, about an attempt to bolster their population. Some bright spark in one of their government departments had a light bulb moment when they thought about the fact (true) that there are a large number of Japanese descent people living in Brazil. rpl.hds.harvard.edu/faq/japanese-braziliansSo bright spark had the idea that maybe they could attract some of these Japanese Brazilians to return to live in Japan. The programme was set up and the first people arrived. However one rather unexpected problem arose, they looked Japanese, spoke Japanese but very much thought and acted Brazilian, the key differences being conformity and compliance with rules is not part of the Brazilian psyche (speaking from long experience)   |

yes the japanese thought that japanese 'blood' would make all the difference
so they gave out TONS of 5 years working visas to brazilians who could link there way way back to a japanese immigrant through highly questionable brazilian paperwork
turned out having a japanese grandparent didn't really make you japanese
but it hasn't gone too badly
japanese companies got the workers to do jobs young japanese didn't really want
poor but hard working brazilians got better pay jobs and futures
the japanese people learned to be a tiny bit more open about foreigners
at least until corona
