I've been waiting for one of you guys to raise this issue. This guy joins an embarrassing list of NZ'ers who have been fitted up by Crown/Police using the bottomless resources of the Govt. Inevitably these victims appear as an easy mark and get sorted out by vindictive police officers hellbent on spectacular career advancements. e.g. Hutton /Arthur Thomas and the medal he got not repudiated after Muldoon pardoned Thomas. The length of time taken is disgraceful. Witness Scott Watson. 23 yrs and the're not letting him go because he "won't own his crime" Maybe,just maybe he won't admit it because he didn't do it. I've waded through the transcripts of his Wellington trial and I don't know if he did it but based on what I read I wouldn't have convicted him. And the others you probably know about. Shameful on the old boy/ girl network

Shameful on the old boy/ girl network I wonder if part of the issue is the way prosecutions are handled in NZ. At the lower end criminal prosecutions are handled by the Police Prosecutions department whilst "capital" crimes are handled by Crown Solicitors who are contracted to the Solicitor General's department. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_prosecutor_(New_Zealand)There is no arms length Public Prosecutor/Attorney Generals department in NZ, who might be a better filter on cases being presented for prosecution. |

Certainly rather alarming when even the Crown state to the Judge that Alan Hall didn't do it.
Witnesses described a strongly built Moari, about 6 ft, right handed.
Hall has 5'8, slight build, white, and left handed.
Police altered witness statements to make it fit Hall.
I think the sickening part is it took 35 yrs to sort out the obvious.
On Scott Watson, I can't form an opinion on that. I've read the books. The evidence looks weak and doctored. But then people who knew they guy sound very confident he did it. I was working with a guy who had sailed with him on a delivery trip. I can't even remember how the conversation started, but he stated without prompting that he was absolutely confident Scott was the guy. I asked why, and it was down to personality traits and weird behavior. A fixation with knives was one, and what sounded like a strong passive aggressive or just aggressive trait.
I know you can't convict people on personality traits, and I do rather suspect the police doctored the evidence. But at the same time, people close to the case believe they have the right guy. I doubt Watson will get a pardon. Alan Hall should get $100 mil at least, I would have thought.

I've been waiting for one of you guys to raise this issue. Its funny Admiral. There are so many injustices in our world right now, its hard to get fired up over all of them... I saw this story, and thought about posting on it. But it is already sorted out. What will happen to the cops that doctored the evidence? Already dead? Retired? or serving senior commandeers? Would help if they were named. |

Haven't followed this one but I have little problem believe the plods and system stitched him up just to get a result. Getting 'a result' seems to be the be all to end all with the plods or at least was, I do detect the plods losing lots of the old school hardarses and replacing them with people whose description is a few sentences of acronyms. I'm still not too sure which of those 2 groups should be feared the most.
