just announced www.kiwiblog.co.nz/2022/06/the_reshuffle_changes.html#commentsone might call it rearranging the deck chairs on the SS Labour/Titanic The big news is Mallard is leaving parliament, all the protestors who stood up to the weather, the bullying, police thuggery and bad music can take a bow! Also Poto Williams appears to have been given the off, with Hipkins replacing her for police, and no mention of a new role for her. The other disaster area, health, has not been touched, Angry Andy remains firmly entrenched

When asked exactly why Williams was turfed out, Ardern gave a long answer, but they key thing was the word “narrative”. Essentially Williams was brought in when Labour had an internal political problem over use of armed response units in police and were making administrative changes within the service. She also fit the zeitgeist of Ardern’s new ministry after Labour’s crushing election victory in 2020.
Now the politics have changed and Ardern has clearly decided that a new face, more in keeping with the political necessity of a tough-on-the-gangs stance, is in order.
...
Nanaia Mahuta, however retains the local Government portfolio. Putting McAnulty in there seems to be a way to try to improve political management, without getting rid of Mahuta – a move which would be justified if only for the fact that being foreign minister and local government minister at the same time are not really compatible jobs. Whether this will work or not is an open question.

the end of a recent article somewhere commented on how this re-shuffle is in part labour preparing the lifeboats for a loss at the next election
if labour lose in 2023 most of their senior talent will walk rather than be in opposition for 8-10? years, (as happened for national when winston1st chose utu and the losers to form the next gov.)
young talent, more likely to stick around through opposition, are now being moved up into sensor positions to test, reward and blood them
the end of year re-shuffle will probably see many of them given senior jobs + ministries for the possible final 10 months of labour's run
then through the dark years of opposition they can claim to be "former minster of xxx in the ardern gov." etc.

"The bigger thing to look at from yesterday's reshuffle… what it actually showed us is: you can't have a winning deck without any aces in it," she told AM on Tuesday.
"You've shuffled things around but you've put more responsibility on to Chris Hipkins, who's already got a lot. You've put Building and Construction on to Megan Woods, who already has a lot
"The big questions are: will it turn the polls? I think the answer's probably no.
"Will it actually fix the issues? Again, I'd say the answer is no because the policy settings aren't changing."
