Tomorrow morning could be quite scary if Nancy Pelosi carry’s through on her promise to visit Taiwan
China has stated that if her plane and it’s escorts don’t respond to tactical measures by the Chinese airforce to leave Taiwans airspace they will shoot them down .
Kim Il Jong said yesterday that North Korea is 100% ready to go to war with the US . This should be scaring the shit out of South Korea because that is where he will send his crappy rockets first and probably Japan too .
it makes one wonder if China , Korea and Russia are conspiring to distract the US on multiple fronts .
scary times man , our little internal bitchfest down here is sparrow fight by comparison .

Oh err, Just when the world was starting to get bored with the war in Ukraine. Yes em, this is a big deal. Them fighting words from China. ‘If she dares’: China warns Nancy Pelosi against visiting Taiwan The foreign ministry threatens ‘serious consequences’ if the US house speaker makes a trip to the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. China says its military will never “sit idly by” if US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi were to visit Taiwan, the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. In Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian reiterated earlier warnings on Monday, saying “there will be serious consequences if she insists on making the visit”. He did not spell out any specific consequences. “We are fully prepared for any eventuality,” he said. “The People’s Liberation Army [PLA] will never sit by idly. China will take strong and resolute measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.” China has been steadily ratcheting up diplomatic and military pressure on Taiwan. Threats of retaliation over a visit by Pelosi have driven concerns of a new crisis in the Taiwan Strait, which separates the two sides, that could roil global markets and supply chains. www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/8/1/china-warns-pelosi-against-visiting-taiwan

Looks like she is going ahead with the visit (around 9pm local time) , she can't back down can she - hopefully the chinese suck it up rather than start something to save face ... plenty of angst in the world lately.

I'm not sure this is going to make Taiwan, or the world, a better place anytime soon.

That app crashed 5 mins after I posted here . Looks like the aircraft did a big arc back to Taiwan .
Who wants to invest in a toaster and jug making factory with me ? They only need to last 13 to 18mths and the distribution network is there already with the warehouse and Briscoes😂
But seriously , something will give . I’m no expert on Chinese culture but it sounds like because they’ve talked up going aggro they are obliged to follow through . It remains to be seen how aggro they get . I have a feeling they will take it out on Taiwan to save a bit of face and not directly take on the US .

A few years ago was at Beijing airport. Endless queue of pax to Taipei filling 737 skytrains. Sabre rattling to keep politburo hierarchy focused on Xi Jingpin's self appointment of president for life. Meantime business as usual between Taiwan & China

There are lots of nuances here that only deep Sino-western relationship experts will understand.
My very basic understanding is that:
1. Pelosi does not represent Biden or the official US govt line
2. The US has said both: a) that they recognise the legitimacy of a greater China region b) but that they do not support military interventions
Those two statements a & b are deliberately ambiguous in the context of Taiwan. Therefore, they could be used to either support the US either getting heavily involved or sitting back and watch any Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
And the Chinese are smart enough to know that.
Pelosi’s visit doesn’t change this conveniently ambiguous US position and so I don’t see it as quite as incendiary as it first appears.
