Saw MPI I assume in action in BOI Some yacht had anchored in the no anchor zone. Seemed to be just getting them to move. Got checked out at Poor Knights too. They just cruised past slowly probably as we had a rod in the holder from earlier in the day 😂 cost a friend $1500. Because he forgot he had the lure out.

These guys are cruising around Kawau looking very businesslike. I asked them politely who they are what they are doing? They said “Local Iwi” and “Educating people about caulerpa.” They said they had been deploying an underwater drone around the area and noticed caulerpa problems notably on Iris Shoal. They were educating people anchoring and fishing on Iris Shoal. A crew of 4 people stopped for lunch at KBC for 2.5hrs. Only later did I notice their AIS ID shows them as “Law Enforcement”. I didn’t challenge them on this but wish I had. Maybe their boat is an ex-Police Protector and they conveniently forgot to update the MMSI record. But surely that is misleading to present themselves as law enforcement and potentially problematic?

Think they are the iwi based in Pakiri . They were meant to be out last year as fisheries officers but werent binding unless they had an official MPI certified person onboard. Just cant rock up and say we are maori fisheries. Think it was on here or over we had this debate. Telling them to do one,
Mook Hohneck and his cronies based at Ngati Manuhiri Pakiri

You will sleep easy knowing that these tax funded chaps are on the case "educating" people. Caulerpa will be a thing of the past quicker than you can say "ka pai te koha" 👍

That's right it's another conspiracy. No, in 10 years time it's going to be everywhere and our coast will be fucked. Entire species will be wiped out.

And a couple of people in a boat will prevent this outcome?

And a couple of people in a boat will prevent this outcome? In Duckmaster world, with race based law enforcement, anything is possible.

And a couple of people in a boat will prevent this outcome? A bit of education might delay the inevitable by a few years. It might just give science the time to come up with a solution before critical species go extinct. Could be the difference between some species still existing in 20yrs or being wiped out in 10yrs. I am continually amazed by the number of people who still have no idea that Caulerpa is even a thing and wouldn't even consider washing their anchor if they pulled up a bit of seaweed.

More than 220 warranted honorary fishery officers work around New Zealand. Each year they do about 27,000 inspections and catch more than 1000 amateur fishers breaking the law. That's "volunteers" for you fish. They are warranted and have legal authority to act under the legislation. I don't know if these guys in the boat are warranted volunteers, or they are still in training working towards it. But good on these three guys in a boat doing their bit.

I'm not sure why you can't converse in a civil manner like everyone else on this board, and why you have to bring your special brand of toxicity along. I don't have any time for it, but just want to point out how wrong you are, as follows. The boat in question is a Ngati Manahuri boat. They have 3 of them. Not sure if you are aware but Ngati Manahuri is a race based organisation. They have rights to take large numbers of fish and shellfish based on their race. What they are doing is trying to stop everyone else from taking fish so they can take more. That particular process is called 'customary take'. But at the same time Ngati Manahuri have stopped any and all initiatives at marine conservation in the Hauraki Gulf, on the grounds that they demand a race based privilege to take fish when no one else can. They even managed to get the last govt to propose an act of parliament to cement this race based fishing privilege. They call the areas "High Protection Areas". It's where if your grandad fucked a Maori chick you can go fishing, and if he didn't, you can't. In any other world other than Duckmaster world, that means race has everything to do it with.

Do you actually understand what customary fishing rights are? Do you understand how they are actually applied? You are so arrogant in your statements it's unbelievable. Race has nothing to do with the protection of the Hauraki Gulf and education about Caulerpa. That's what was raised above that's what the comment was about, that's what I was responding to. The obnoxious uncivilised statement that you made about anything being possible. Your gripe with a 180 year old agreement is worthless twaddle bollocks. If you don't like what your ancestors agreed to pack your bags and head off to where ever it is you descended from...

I do know a HFO and no these guys are not warrented and believe they dont have to be,for them to board/check catches etc they must onboard a warrented officer whether that be a paid mpi staff or a volunteer hfo, Customary rights have or are abusing the system in a lot of cases.Claiming rights with no permit.Having Kaimoana confiscated and then its waste. The purpose of customary take is to allow for excess to be taken for such events at maraes like tangi, special birthdays etc not we need a feed so we can take what we like. Yes I agree to customary take but 1 stipulation I believe that should be enforced is that any seafood must be of legal size,no exceptions. Another part of customary rights that needs to be introduced is only those from IWI/HAPU that can demonstrate that the area they are taking from is their traditional fishing grounds,so one Hapu cant enter anothers area. The marine spatual for Auckland/Hauraki guide under "sea change tai timupari" would of given goverence to maori around the entire foeshore out to about 10 miles in return they would allow non maori access but could impose restrictions on kaimaona take. that could be from from size limits to number of shellfish taken or where they could be extract from. Not a bad thing in my mind. As we know Maori had winter/summer grounds, they rested one area under Rahui.

That's how I understand it as well HT. Dad did it years ago (30 years ago), but got sick of the fact he couldn't do anything if someone had undersize catch, and that he got abused so gave it up after a couple of years. On the customary rights, I believe anyone can use it, doesn't matter if you're honky/Maori/whatever. Or at least that's how it used to be, dad used it a few times but that was also years ago.
