Why would you try selling as soon as it's stuffed? What outgoings do you have on a mussle farm if you don't do anything? That, and what is the problem with caulerpa and mussles? There is an assumption it smoothers the mussles, but this is a brand new thing, I'd wait and see what happens to productivity. Unless of course MPI ban harvesting, then your fucked. Not sure how you can sell a mussle farm that has a govt ban on it though.

Another MPI stuff up is the land based Army worm, how did that get in and allowed to spread? First detected 2022 and why not eradicated then?? www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/exotic-pests-and-diseases-in-new-zealand/long-term-biosecurity-management-programmes/fall-armyworm-in-new-zealand/

Outgoings on a mussel farms would be significant. Staffing of barges which are very large and expensive commercial vessels. Not to mention maintenance of the farms themselves.

Well here we go again. Asian clams found in Waikato river. How is this stuff getting through the borders?? www.mpi.govt.nz/news/media-releases/call-for-community-vigilance-as-new-clam-species-found-in-waikato-river/Overseas, these shellfish are a pest species because they reproduce rapidly and can clog up water infrastructure such as hydro-electricity plants, municipal water supply and irrigation systems. They are also potentially a threat to native species, as in large populations they consume a lot of plankton. Biosecurity New Zealand Deputy Director General Stuart Anderson says it is not known how the freshwater gold clam will behave in New Zealand conditions, but overseas it has proved difficult to control and there has been no documented successful eradication.

I’m suspicious about that one . Hamilton is one of the most multicultural cities in the country and my money is on it being introduced on the sly . But then it’s also an aquarium curiosity that can be used for filtering the water so maybe it’s escaped as larvae ? . Could’ve been imported with fish unknowingly but how the Sam Hill it got into the river from there is beyond my imagination .

No Mention of banning Customary rights?
Proposed temporary fisheries closure of Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island) and nearby islands
Tēnā koe,
The Motairehe Marae Trust, supported by iwi trust board Ngāti Rehua Ngātiwai ki Aotea, has requested a temporary closure to the harvest of scallops, pāua, and rock lobster, from the fisheries waters within 3 nautical miles of:
•Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island)
•Little Barrier Island (Te Hauturu-o-Toi)
•the Mokohinau Islands
•Simpson Rock and Horn Rock.
The request is for a 2-year closure.
After the request was made, the Northland Scallop Fishery (SCA 1) and Coromandel Scallop Fishery (SCA CS), which include the proposed area, were closed to commercial and recreational scallop fishing under section 11 of the Fisheries Act 1996. The Motairehe Marae Trust Board wish to continue with their request to prohibit the harvest of scallops, pāua, and rock lobster to establish their tino rangatiratanga in the decision-making process.
The closure request and map can be found at the links below.

Related Great Barrier Island Controlled Area Notice
The proposed area includes a Controlled Area Notice that Biosecurity New Zealand placed on Great Barrier Island to minimise the spread of exotic Caulerpa species. This includes Blind Bay, Tryphena Harbour, and Whangaparapara Harbour. A temporary closure would have no effect on any Caulerpa Controlled Area Notice.
The Controlled Area Notice is in place until 31 October 2023.

So your meant to check your Anchor as it come in, and drop any weed back in the water where it came from. But if you find fan worm or whatever else you have to take it to a haulout for special cleaning. .?
