Makes me want to cry. Has been my favourite local cafe for years with the easy-going ambience, friendly staff and fair prices that many here will have experienced.
But this week a new owner took over who totally doesn’t ‘get it’. New high-intensity table arrangements will probably double capacity but create horrible cramped atmosphere and even more noise inside than before. Same concept outside too. Plus horrible new red colour scheme for crockery and red rope gate for queuing - like a tacky nightclub door (ok I’m being fussy here).
But the showstopper for me is the price increase of an Americano from $4.50 to $6.50. I paid but told them I won’t return because I’m not stupid enough to pay that much for a coffee every day.
End of an era. Such a shame.

Really?? Saw the signs etc last week or so. Will never go there again then, plus I can head to my own machine up the hill at home

End of an era. Such a shame. the problem why NZ coffee's are so expensive is the way they make them... One cup at a time. In Spain the barista is super smart. Cups are stack 5deep with spoons ready to go... The barista has 3 x cafe con leches, a short black, and 4 x cappuccinos. He lays out 8 cups and make enough coffee for all eight drinks and frothed milk for 4x. He then pours the coffees an milks and boom 8 x coffees in the time a trendy kiwi barrista has made one.... But with a price of $2. Labour is 50-60% of the cost.

I have no problem paying $5-6 for a good coffee. If I saw one for $2 I'd go elsewhere as you know it will be shit and life is way too short for shit coffee. I currently pay $4.50..3 times a morning for excellent coffee.
The same theory when buying a good steak, ignore the $15 crap and go for the $30. You'll remember the quality long after you have forgotten the price. Next year my steak bill will plummet at the same time as the quality sky rockets. I'm now into what's called the smart mans Waugu, I have a pile of little Speckled Parks coming. They have very marbled meat like Waugu but without all the high maintenance needed with Waugus. They are quite a delicate breed.
D1 and boyfriend are in Montenegro currently. I asked 'Whats the best thing you've found so far?" to get back "2lts for $2, but it is a bit shit". Mid 20's with a limited budget means shit is often the better financial option but I'm not in that same state so I can afford better quality.
But then I suppose 'quality' is subjective. Some reckon spending $200 on a meal at Akls flashest restaurant gets the best quality. Having done that more than once I'd argue a Vietnamese street vendor produces far tastier food at a tiny fraction of the price so does that mean the wizzened up old Vietnamese lady a higher quality producer than a 3 star chef?

It’s the same coffee beans advertised by their near competitors for $4.50 - $5. So at $6.50 they are taking the piss and the new owner has obviously done some sales projections - probably shown to his bank manager - based on massive price hikes. Which I’m not buying into.

Waugu yes its not bad if you fat less meat but does have the same taste as 1/2kg prime 5 day old sirloin,bit like lamb now that has all the fat trimmed off,got be healthier but moderation is the key

I have had 3 comment the change from Gins more unusual and organicish style menu to what many are saying is a US diner like menu, also hasn't gone down well. But again last weekend when the sun was out it was busier than standing room only.
The place went off when Gin had it, it's been going off just as well since. Come summer he'll have to employ another person just to shove the money into the back.
