Had my Mum out on the boat for the first time over the weekend, along with the missus and kids.
Felt I was being a bit OTT taking both Mum and missus through the locations of my 3 fire blankets and 3 fire extinguishers onboard my kind of not that big 37ft yacht, before we left the mooring.
Then see this below article of a stink pot going up at Hamilton Island. The thing that gets me is how thick and black the smoke is. Any boat fire is going to be a bunch of arse. Epoxy resin, batteries, soft furnishings, or maybe diesel. Not exactly clean burning firewood.
And the random thing about taking other people through the safety equipment? I'd forgotten I had a 3rd blanket and extinguisher onboard, so learnt something myself. First overnighter of the season, so it was a good thing to do. Even showed them where my flares are, just for GO30 (forgot to check if they were in date come to think of it, damn things are probably rubbish already). Even showed the missus how to use the PLB that I keep in the cockpit.
Installed a smoke alarm as well. One of those tiny ones with a 10yr battery life. Black Panther told me a story about how he had a boat fire. $8 electrical switch failed on his bow thruster. Cooked a 200A fuse and started a fire. They smelt the smoke and went looking. I thought, fuck that, I'd prefer the load beeping thing rather than the 'what is that smell' thing... Especially when the kiddies are sleeping onboard.
Anyone worked out how to put out a battery fire yet? I've got 2 temp monitors on the house bank, one from solar, and one from smart alternator. Hoping that stop any thermal run aways, even though I've only got FLA's.
