I'm getting increasingly concerned about the state of Western democracy, while the autocratic and totalatarian leaders of the world are going gang-busters.
1) The US, poster boy of democracy (for some reason) is supeonering their ex President, argueing about voter fraud, foreign interference in elections and can't even keep top secret documents secret
2) The UK, the 'original democracy', after a 3 month slow and careful selection process, the PM can't outlast a lettuce. 5 PM's in 6 years. PM after PM with no mandate from the people, but no general election in sight. Half the Union wanting to leave the Union (Scotland, Northern Ireland and the EU boarder with Ireland)
3) Australia, I can't remember how many PM's in recent years. Scott Morison secretly taking on Miniterial roles that even his cabinet did not know about.
4) China, Xi Zing Ping secures power for life.
5) Russia, don't really need to explain that...
Western economies are coming in for a hiding, and we have leadership systems and people that can't organise a root in a whore house.
You can't get a coherent or considered response to economic issues if you are swapping PM's every 5 minutes.
Price of firewood has gone through the roof in Germany. Have a cousin living their. Everyone is trying to re-commission old wood burners, cobble together fire-places, re-build chimney's that were blocked up years ago. They know it is going to be a cold winter. I can't imagine the situation in England, every home has a gas boiler, and those houses turn to iceburgs without 24/7 heating, but gas prices are more than the rent.
I'm not historian, but it is the type of thing that leads to widespread civil unrest and revolutions. Has all the hall-marks of the Great Irish Potato famine, no food, no heating, mass migration....

That deserves its own thread Alcaholic. Not really relevant to this one. My biggest bug is that Aotearoa isn't the name for NZ, it is the name for either Northland, or the North Island at best. Ngi Tahu have a major issue with it by all accounts. The name effectively chops the country off at Cook Straight... |
