Are you a province of the Netherlands, or the Land of the Long White Cloud ?? It is not my decision to make, but I prefer the latter. And I love it that your schools are teaching the Maori language , , , Being bilingual improves brain function, and te reo Māori is easy to learn. Under the Treaty of Waitangi, te reo Māori is a taonga (treasure) to be protected as the indigenous language of New Zealand. Just like NZ sign language, it's an official language of Aotearoa, New Zealand. www.flickr.com/photos/24517262@N06/50954154133

yep AJ...Te Reo will be of enormous benefit to help our seriously degraded (reading, writing,'rithmetic) students in the coming years. About as much as 4yrs of Latin assisted mey generation. About the only use I can see is filling in benefit application forms as the govt.dumbs down English in the education system and maori continues to be promoted as NZ first language. Without our permission ,consultation or agreement

you'd prefer a 7 word name over a 2 word name
and you'd prefer our students learn to 'speak' 3 languages before they could the adequately read the world's lingua franca
and maths? it's too hard, what's the point the gov. will just take what you earn anyway so why bother being numerate....they'd certainly prefer an innumerate peasantry
imho
rather than defending nz woke....which you only have the barest understanding
the world would prefer you spend your time
convincing your peers
not to vote trump2

ajo why do you have a say in the indigenous people in NZ (arrived 800 years ago approx) when the natives of north America (arrived some 15,000 years ago) have been treated so bad in comparison, but you don't hear a word from New Zealanders about this.

NZ only has 2 official languages - Māori and sign.
English is not an official language. And there are no plans to make it one. Which means there is technically no protection to English being replaced by stealth.

Better you make changes on the American Indian language/ bi lingual, Your dumb presidents and how they are selected, and the name of your country to reflect the original people. Most kiwis would rather be bi lingual with a useful language like Spanish, Chinese than Maori. No fuck off back to fixing your own fucked up back yard AJ the Troll!

That's an unwarranted rant.I thought AJ's post was his opinion and a point of view that others hold even though I disagree with it. As I stated NZ needs to concentrate on basic education and bringing it back to levels of yesteryear. And I didn't realise English is not an official language. Now with this bunch of incompetent numpty communists it won't surprise me that they introduce Russian as an official language

Aquaholic, you are the only person that thinks AJ is a troll. You are like a dog that didn't get enough socialising as a puppy. When a new dog comes to play at the dog park, you go all rabid and bark and growl, while all the other dogs just think you are a dick. If you take the race based elements out of NZ place names, it is an interesting consideration. Are we in any way related to a province of the Netherlands? A shitty, swampy and low lieing province at that? The name Auck-Land always bemuses me. It is pronounced the same as Orcs. The derogatory term used by Ukrainians to describe russian monsters. According to google, Auck-land got its name when Governor Hobson wanted to brown-nose Lord Auck, Viceroy of India, in 1840. A lot of our european names are of Lords that have never been here, have no historical relationship, and were only named as a brown-nosing exercise of the day. Tamaki Maka rua is interesting, apparently it means Tamaki of 1000 lovers. Sounds like the locals used to be whores... I don't support a name change to Aotearoa, as it only covers Northland. Has no relevance to the South Island. But it is perfectly normal for young countries to consider their naming and occasionally change names. The New Hebrides is a good example. The issue is the loaded racial basis around names. In today's current woke co-governance environment, trying to have an adult debate around it is not really possible. Far better to focus on more pressing issues such as co-governance, poverty, health, crime. All that shit that Labour said they'd sort, but haven't....

The nearest name there was for the country as a whole was Nu Tirani, seems appropriate in the current context if you say it as New Tyranny. Most of the so called Maori names are made up recently as the locations were non existent prior to white settlement. Heard an interesting story about the scientifically advanced peace loving maoris living on Kawau, apparently they were basically a bunch of pirates, used to ambush canoes travelling up and down the coast and have the captives for dinner. The fire pits and bones have been identified, but of course we don't talk about that...

The fire pits and bones have been identified, but of course we don't talk about that... There is a small hill near the start of the Tongariro crossing. I can't speak the Maori name, it is long. It translates directly to "the hill where we ate the rats". It was the site of a major battle. The victors cannibalised the loosers, whom they referred to as rats. My daughter was telling me that Waka doesn't just mean boat. It also means car, and / or transport. As in Waka Katohe NZ Transport agency. She was having a bit of trouble understanding when I said that is because Maori never had cars, their language pre-dates colonist technology, and that is why they call their cars a boat. What everyone forgets, if we are getting into NZ History, was that all the tribes wanting protection from the Queen of Britain, cause Nga Puhi were a pack of cunts, and we running raping and pillaging raids up and down the North Island. Strangely, today, Nga Puhi are still a pack of cunts. They can't even sort out their internal power struggles so as to settle a billion dollar treaty claim. Last tribe to settle... That was the genesis of Ti Treaty.

Laughable, the "Fish of Maui"
They had no idea of its shape until Cook mapped it.
