We all know the joke about the light at the end of the tunnel. It turns out to be a train coming. Or some fucker bringing you more work. Phrases and sayings always have a meaning in reality, but we often forget where the saying came from. Like something going viral. Well, this makes me feel sick. A person has been hit and killed by a train in the Rimutaka tunnel. What an awful way to go. You'd hear the train (or vibrations in the track) long before you saw it, with bugger all options to get out of its way. I can't imagine how the train driver will be feeling. I'd expect nightmares, and certainly would have a few hang-ups about driving trains into tunnels. I know the Police had arrested and prosecuted a guy that had been caught walking through the tunnel twice before, moderately recently, like a few months ago. i.e. a repeat offender. Wonder if it was the same guy. www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/wellington/300766728/person-dies-after-being-hit-by-train-inside-tunnel-on-wellington-line

some years ago a train on the east? coast rounded a corner to see a home-make jigger coming the other way the guys on the jigger managed to jump off before the train smashed into it and scarpered into the scrub apparently the train was 'unscheduled' meaning it wasn't on the regular timetable and probably why the jigger guys got caught out www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/train-crew-surprised-by-home-made-jigger-on-tracks/LKV4TAFWZBG3NBWNWX7WAY7AXE/this rimutaka case seems to have been a scheduled train so who knows why the walker felt it was a safe bet counterintuitively the best place to get away from a train in an old narrow tunnel is probably lying between the tracks but you wouldn't want to try on that either:o( 15? years ago 2 were killed by a low bridge after sitting? on top of a wagon between kaikoura and chch
apparently they had done the trip several times before without hitting the bridge, lying down???

The guys on the jigger set off from Pahiatua to go fishing at Mahia on there XR250 powered creation. one of them got a (years old) timetable from the local railway station and decided they would have a clear run so off they went complete with chilly bin and surfcasters ...
