Another obligatory thread for this time of year… So what’s your plan? I see much pleasure traffic obviously taking advantage of this great weather window to get to a destination in time for Xmas. A few Auckland boats already in the BOI. Which I’m predicting will be an absolute zoo this year. Will try to avoid until late Jen / early Feb.

View AttachmentDeparting for Gt Barrier tomorrow for up to 2 weeks - from the forecast looks like it will be a passage in launch mode or motorsail at best. Every forecast update is different for what they think is going to happen mid - late next week.

I think inside of Coromandel is an underrated and often unexplored area.

I think inside of Coromandel is an underrated and often unexplored area. Get a offshore breeze and explore coville bay area, exposed anchorages but can peaceful, will get a slight tide goggle, anywhere around waimate island or where the little boat entrance enters coro harbour, some nice spots too.

Most I've talked to are heading off late Jan/Feb to get the quiet and better sailing weather. We talked about sneaking out for a couple of weeks in Feb but now D1 is taking me on a tour of the drug cartels and gang wars of central America instead. Riv and Maritimo owners were heard to cheer at the news

I don’t think I’ve actually ever seen it this busy before:

Does not feel too busy here are Barrier, certainly less boats than this time last year. Maybe more on their way today

we spent a few days out there, back in marina to see family back off to USA and to avoid the wind coming. Was pretty quiet out there, always helps with light winds as people spreadout. Now watching this easterly to see when we head back out.

Does not feel too busy here are Barrier, certainly less boats than this time last year. Maybe more on their way today We managed to catch the 12hr sw window on the 18th, at 2pm it was n.e, by 330 it was sw, pretty much exactly as forecast. Got away from westhaven at 530pm, the wind was still holding out past Motutapu so we kept going. Got into Pt Jackson just after midnight. Down to the mercs the next day, saw a massive workup, gannets diving 15 at a time, dolphins rounding the fish up into a ball and three whales cruising through it all as well. Sat out a couple of days of easterlies in the cove and then down the bottom end of the island for 5-6 stunning days. Very few boats around, we probably could have had a bay each to ourselves if we'd all spread out. Came back into home bay when the easterlies started on about the 27th. Had a playful pod of about 6 dolphins around the boats on the 29th so the kids had their first swim with them which they were pretty excited about. Then back upto Pt Charles on 30th and home on NYE. Had to be back on the 4th so decided to cut out losses and get around the cape while the wind was only in the low 20's instead of the high 20's/mid 30's.

Looks perfect. Yea anyone lucky enough to get away pre-Xmas got the best run of things. Those if us who departed later got much less.
Yes there’s a slight lull over the w/e but it’s not worth the schlep of loading up family & food for a brief 24hrs before unloading it all again. We’re playing a longer game and planning activities on land until at least mid-Jan. Then re-evaluate.

Sitting in Redcliffs, surprisingly calm most of the time, whilst over the hill it is blowing 30kts across Fitzroy into Smokehouse Looking at Marinetraffic for BOI, lots of boats sheltering around Russell/Matauwhi Bay
