If you’re remotely interested / concerned about the advances of AI then watch this short summary of chatGPT by Jordan Peterson. I’ve been following it but didn’t realise how profoundly advanced it already is and it’s only just got started. The tasks Jordan asked it to perform and that it nailed (in about 3 seconds) are scary. youtu.be/7z-LnYymJpM

Saw a vid the other day where it showed a VERY strong political bias. It was more than a little spooky.

To run ChatGP OpenAI runs 3600 servers. Each server has 8 GPU's which cost US$10,000 each. The power needed just to cool them is more than the power needed to run them.
That be some big bucks to set up and then run. Stand by for the Piper, he'll be coming to get his pay.

This touches on the environmental impact of the internet overall. Estimates say the basic server infrastructure hosting all the data & services alone is about the same as an entire European country like the Netherlands.
Then on top of that you need to add all our home, office and remote devices and networks / routers / Wi-Fi etc.
Overall, the total figure is approx. 10% of the world’s total energy consumption and is on track to double by 2025.

That is why the big data center owners are increasingly investing in energy.

There are approximately 5 data centers being built in Auckland. Each will consume about 20MW when full.
They are regionally locating them due to latency, data sovereignty and government security requirements ie can’t hold government data offshore.
They require significant redundancy in connections.

Yeap it's huge and rocketing upwards. Google data centres, and probably others, put out so much heat it can be seen in space. They have to continually tweak the weather/climate satellites for them so they don't bugger the measurements being taken. This post is powered by the sun or more the device is.

A really fun analysis would be what % of internet traffic actually adds value to humankind as opposed to complete drivel (like this post)? 😊
As a random guess I’d say a decent chunk of activity / email / data traffic does help because it’s linked to tangible services or useful communication eg 25%. But I’d guess the other 75% is pure noise that nobody would miss.
Those figures are complete guesses fuelled only by an idle Sunday afternoon and a cold beer…

Wasn't there those stats that 90% of internet traffic was porn? I was that in the 1990's? (was there even internet then?)

Wasn't there those stats that 90% of internet traffic was porn? I was that in the 1990's? (was there even internet then?) In the early days I think that was right but it's tapered back a bit these days.
It's also tapering back again as we speak due to the US bring in, and some states enforcing it, age verification. Pornhub who is about 50% of interweb porn and one of the most hit sites on the open web, something crazy like 42 billion views a month, has seen visits drop by 80% in the states where they have to upload a Govt ID to get age verified.
We're seeing more and more sites requiring Govt ID to be uploaded for verification. I've had Paypal do it plus a few others, even NZ Lifestock yesterday, but most I get are more around financing laws to do with sussing whether you finance terrorists etc.

Interesting interview with some computor dude who reckons a real risk of AI is it stopping some innovation and the likes. AI can't create new it can only copy what it knows and tweak around that. It was a very interesting chat around it;s limitations, which do seem far more significant that are currently being sold.

I think one of the best things AI might do is to kill off large-scale social media (because you won’t be able to trust what’s real anymore). Which will drive a return to the smaller online community groups (like this forum) where users are connected by some common interest and even know (or know of) each other. So it’s a small but authentic community which has far more appeal than a huge impersonal social media platform that has been taken over by celebrities and AI and the content cannot be trusted anymore. Instead people will hang out on a handful of niche online communities which they trust.

Agree and I think we are seeing a slight swing that way anyway as many people seem to get their knickers twisted by the slightest thing these days so retreat to comfortable silos.
I heard Tem Morrison on the radio this morning saying how he has been scanned and is now 'in a AI library'. He can now feature in film without even being there.

This is pretty impressive, the implications are quite scary. For a hint at the possibilities, the drama series "The Capture" is well worth a look, season 2 is pretty topical. www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/the-capture
