Interesting article thebfd.co.nz/2023/03/04/what-kind-of-communication-system-does-new-zealand-need/including its reference to Marine VHF. But no mention of HAM radio which is the easy go to for licensed operators. I was told one of the issues with Vector getting power back on in our region was the field guys inability to communicate with each other and control centres due to the almost total reliance on mobile phones. Might need to rethink this for all emergency/utility services and where omitted return to UHF radios, or even the likes of a Starlink connection, in their vehicles.

In the Chch situation, we had large numbers of engineers deployed doing critical infrastructure assessments, each team deployed with a CCC operator. Each operators and ute had UHF radios. We had no issue with in-field comms. Pain in the arse is business as usual operations, but invaluable when the shit went down. I see RNZ is kicking up about axing the AM network. It works well over long distance and gets into blind spots FM can't. Horrible to listen to on a normal day, but again, works when the shit goes down. The main reason for axing the AM network, is that the new Speaker wants to save $1.3m by not broadcasting parliament live on it. As we have all seen, a cashless society, EFT-POS only and comms by data networks (social media) do not work when you need them to. What is that word, resilience? Never gets thought of by hipsters riding e-scooters (that can't charge when the power goes off).
