Onboard the fizz we have 3 paper charts, manukau, thames and approaches to ak. Locate items of interest(fishing)then using garmin fish thing, view bottom/structure ,very handy. If success load way point in too handheld garmin gps. Have read manual but need a 8 yr old to show me or load on too ff and save. Boy saved ramps ,so I now know have to load tracker/locate on machine and follow.
Seems more simple ,lay course out on chart and follow compass.

How much is your annual sub? I assume B&G run navionics? Garmin wont talk to Navionics... Lol. Close but no Pajama's - actually no, not even close ;-) Navionics is owned by Garmin. I think its like NZD$200/year. It just goes into the budget with everything else I spend on the boat. I would concur that it isn't really necessary unless I am visiting a new place where I don't have local knowledge...

I would concur that it isn't really necessary unless I am visiting a new place where I don't have local knowledge... Yeah, but Garmin own everything. They bought Nexus as well, now I can't get replacement parts unless I put the whole wind system over to Garmin. Doesn't mean all Garmin gear is compatible with Navionics. I checked a while ago. Apart from my chart plotter being discontinued, this link shows a number of current Garmin plotters not compatible with Navionics www.garmin.com/en-NZ/marine/chartplotter-compatibility/Browsing their new charts, I can see I can get the fishing cartography, but I also get shading out of all 'no-discharge areas'. I already know when I can dump my shit, and this just clutters up the screen / view. Esp around the rocky bits, which is the bits I'd like the clearest view of. My 'discontinued' charts don't have all that BS, so I'm thinking the reasons for an 'upgrade' are minimal.
