The Wahine sank today in 1968. Was just reading up about it. Apparently there was a Storm Warning issued before she left Lyttleton. Some off-hand comment about that being kind of normal for Cook Straight. This "minor fact" didn't appear to figure in the enquiry. I've no idea what forecasting was like back then, but it was obviously a shit-tonne less reliable than these days. In today's modern accident theory analysis (Domino theory), that was obviously the 'save' point. I wonder if they re-did the inquiry today, with the same information they had to hand in 1968, but with modern understanding of accident theory, if they would come up with a different conclusion? The inquiry's conclusion was that the storm was the primary reason for the sinking. They just gloss over the bit that they were warned of it. nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/wahine-disaster

Don’t talk to me about weather forecasting accuracy after this weekend’s shocking inaccuracies. And so I can well imagine someone being a bit cynical about the forecast 50+ yrs ago!
