That Herald story is a shocker for sensationalism. Reads like a "Dad's Army" episode, or "Coastguard shocked to find out they aren't the centre of the Universe and aren't told Everything".
It gives the impression our Govt didn't know the foreign warship was here, and the Voluteers stumbled across an invasion force or something.
In reality, it is a nice anecdote from some valuable and hard working voluteers. Noting the Herald were too lazy to wait for a reply from Defense before publishing. Basically cause it would have wrecked the whole angle of the story.
We did have 2 Navy Helicopters fly over this afternoon. I was a little surprised, I thought we only had 2 total and having them both operational at same was a bit of a shock.

Saw those choppers too - early afternoon whilst I was swimming around the boat on the S side of peninsula.

We saw that boat steaming down the shipping channel directly at us around 12 months ago. We were at Rangi light, they were out by Tiri, AIS said French Military.
At the time I thought it was kind of an odd sight, then when we came home it was tied up to Devonport wharf.
Theirs's already a bunch of conspiracy theories doing the rounds - not helped by the "Defence Expert" the Herald quoted, who claimed it was likely hunting Chinese submarines.
