Friend planning to depart NZ at the next weather window bound for Brisbane. He’s noticed around the 3 Kings area the tidal flow can be 2-3kts with breakers indicated where the depth shallows from 1000m to 100m. Presumably why it’s such a popular fishing spot.
He’s obviously not keen to meet 3kts of tide against a 20-25kt wind sailing singlehanded in a 32ft boat (despite being a Contessa)!
Anyone done that trip?
And what’s the best option for heading west - go wide and far north of the Cape and 3 Kings or tuck in much closer around the Cape and go south under the 3 Kings?

I've done it coming the other way, Brisbane to Opua. Accept it was a complete drifter. Rule one of Ocean passages, stay away from rocky bits. Rule two, I'm not sure there is a rule two. Unless you want to go fishing, stay well away. Which way probably depends on the direction of the wind. Being solo and in a quality but small / slow boat, just stay well the fuck away. The wind will guarantee he wont tootill down the rhumb line, so 5 or 10 or even 50 miles either side of a rocky bit isn't going to make a noticeable difference to passage times. Randomly there is some other shit to dodge out there as well. Not Norfolk Is. I think sea-mounts, which of themselves aren't a hazard, but the rapidly changing sea floor can do strange things to waves. If I recall they are fairly much half way across.

Like Fish I have only done the trip Australia to NZ. However my 2 cents worth would be to head for Norfolk Island and turn for Brisbane in its vicinity. Minimises exposure to the winter lows which will be starting to march across the Tasman.
