To answer a couple of grounded’s Qs and observations…
Forum purpose: As the name implies I’d like it to be primarily a sailing forum about boating in NZ - but I recognise that there’s a strong appetite to also talk about life in general including living in NZ - and politics! And at this point in time it might be more the latter then the former. As we get stuck into our summer holidays I’m expecting a slight shift more towards sailing but I realise that many general sailing forums allow / encourage non-sailing discussion.
Membership: As most people know I set this up a few weeks ago in response to the stifling moderation of that ‘other place’. And despite their claims of being even-handed my perception is that it was a heavily left-wing moderator agenda. A quick look at the list of moderators confirms they are all left-leaning individuals and they couldn’t help themselves. So no, it was not neutrally managed. Of course as a by-product, the majority of people who shared my frustrations and have jumped here are more centre or right of centre - and that is an inevitable reaction. Of course I’d prefer a more balanced mix of views here to avoid the ‘echo chamber’ risk but I realise in the short-term the majority of members are deserters from a very left-driven forum.
Future growth: Of course I’d like to see more people join especially to balance out the current right-wing bias. And I think we should all think about how we present to the outside world right now - like the folks at SA who have spotted us. If we want up attract a broader membership we should try to encourage (not line up and shoot at) counter-views. So let’s please give that a try? And think about any others you could invite to join?
Moderation: As I’ve said clearly before my preference is for little or no moderation and to treat people like adults. So far that has worked and I hope it can continue for as long as possible. So I lay down the challenge to the membership here to self-moderate as much as possible and avoid the need for Admin to jump in! Having said that, I am open to all suggestions and comments on this so if you see specific examples that bother you please let me know.
My ID. Yes it’s no secret that I’m both Admin and Fogg and Rob. Nothing to hide there. I just hope I can continue to post mostly as Fogg and very little as Admin - please help me achieve that!
Cheers
