Yup. Everything is banned in BoI. Anchoring fishing diving spear fishing collecting shell fish set netting any netting taking crays To be fair, the bans only cover 1,000 ha. Why? 200 ha has been found infested with caulerpa. Even the MPI says it is clear its been there for several seasons already, so good luck controlling it... BUT, check out the loop holes. If you live there, like the rich listers and natives that have imposed the rahui, you can still come and go in your boat. You can still anchor there due to safety / weather conditions. Or if you are doing research. The ban will be in place indefinitely. Specifically until all risk of spread is removed. So where will you go cruising this summer? With half of Barrier closed, any permitted anchorages are going to be RAMMED. You could make a big sign for your boat that says 'Research' and carry on as normal? www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/491853/bay-of-islands-anchoring-ban-now-in-place-to-fight-caulerpa-spread?fbclid=IwAR02dO8Ki0rGGduZcm1-eRbWe5UM7rxIbajymUIOdebsuB8BeybEAKT3iFk

Not quite “all “ of the bay of islands but about 1/3rd of the most popular bit . But I’m sure it will change over the next 6 months , for the worse .
West side of coro is on our list of new places to go and also the east side . Cavalli’s coast , whangaroa , Doubtless Bay areas . I saw a gaggle of underground pro sailors from up your creek went to cape KariKari islands last summer .
If anything the anchoring ban might open a few peeps eyes to the other cruising possibilities on our east coast …and spread the shit even further .
To be honest the inner BOI is a bit like going to the best top 10 holiday park year after year

I phoned YNZ, in the hope of talking to our CEO, but he was 'in a meeting'.
I did actually manage to speak to the PR guy Edwan. He wasn't aware of the anchoring ban, but once he got his head around the details couldn't wait to get me off the phone, in a good way. As in was rushing off to speak to David A and the advocacy manager (Raynor?). He did take all my contact details. It wasn't very hard for me to put a bee in his bonnet when he understood the extent of the ban including all forms of water activity, fishing, diving etc.
He was very excited to hear the AC expert said caulerpa was most likely introduced by the aquarium trade (immediately wanted to know if he would go on record). And that the biggest outbreak in the world was confirmed to have been started by the Aquarium at Monoco University. I 'clarified' that no-one has pushed back on the narrative that boaties are spreading it. I am hopeful YNZ will now push back on that.
Lets see if we can get some actual advocacy out of our federation of boating clubs.

But that doesn’t mean we should shoulder the financial responsibility via mooring taxes or whatever gets thought up like they tried with fanworm .

It's no wonder Burnsco et al branding is changing from boat based to camper van based. One of NZ's tider boat builders got talking into making a motorhome for a mate, they know import truck bodies and build flash motorhomes. Chatting to Mr Owner he thinks it's great, no anal boaties to have to worry about. But he has just been talked into building another big Upfold stinker, he does build them exceptionally well.
I believe Kiri is still in her Boston Whaler mode. Look for a flash one with the biggest motors plural, she is very much a girl racer.
Someone needs to organise a race to Picton/Waikawa there abouts in say early Dec, have the return race in later March. A handy method to reposition your boat for Summer cruising.

I'll bet you a good bottle of whisky that on or before Labour Weekend the ban gets extended. PS, where do you park a fleet of Coastal Classic boats if they can't anchor at Russel?

Can you supply all the boats with a brand new set of “caulerpa free” tackle for when they arrive at the sounds

Good point r.e the coastal . Might have to race to Tauranga or whiti city instead

But that doesn’t mean we should shoulder the financial responsibility via mooring taxes or whatever gets thought up like they tried with fanworm . Yes it is possible boats anchors spread it. It is also possible it is spread on tides and currents. It is possible, if not likely, that it was first introduced by the aquarium industry. Given the biggest outbreak in the world came from the Monoco Uni Aquarium. There is no actual evidence that boaties have / are spreading it. More so it is not possible, in that the Barrier Ban prevents us from picking it up in order to move it to BoI (MPI logic). I would like to see two things happen: 1) Push back on the narrative that boaties spread it. Given the blow-back that is going to happen from fisho's, spear fishers adn the wider public, it is important that we are not made the villain here. I expect YNZ to get onto that. 2) A challenge around the logic and effectiveness of a ban on all boating activities in the affected areas. Nature is going to do its own thing. Specifically that caulerpa likes poor viz, doesn't like sunlight, and the change from La Nina to El Nino will probably be all that is needed to control caulerpa. MPI have already convened an expert panel and concluded there is nothing they can do. They cannot erradicate it.

You need to get on with developing a weed-free anchor and chain. No joke. You can get weed-free soft-baiting hooks and jig heads...
