There is so much going on in the election thread, I thought this could do with it's own space.
The Minister for Justice has been in the news a bit lately, and there has been oblique reports about her taking leave due to circumstances in her personal life. I was assuming she broke up with her darling Mani, but...
First google came up with this:
Personal life
She married Natalie Coates in 2016 after same-sex marriage was legalised in New Zealand.[7] They had a baby just before the 2017 election[33] and Allan brought the baby to Parliament.[34][35] Previously she'd been in a relationship another Labour Party MP, Meka Whaitiri. [36]
So, where does Mani Dunlop fit in, if she's married to Natalie Coates? If she was shagging Meka Whaitiri, isn't now, and is more senior than her in caucus, could that explain why Whaitiri suddenly spat the dummy on Labour and joined the Racial Division Party?

Cabinet minister Kiri Allan and her partner Māni Dunlop have separated, Allan has confirmed. Allan confirmed the break-up in recent weeks, saying it was a personal matter and she did not wish to comment further on it. It is understood to be the reason for Allan’s decision to take mental health leave last week, a break she had earlier posted was due to personal circumstances on top of work pressures. Dunlop and Allan got engaged in September last year. Dunlop was the Midday Report presenter at RNZ, but left in March. At her farewell event, Allan had criticised RNZ for its treatment of Māori staff and ability to retain its top talent - comments that later became public, and led to an apology from Allan and acknowledgement that it could have been perceived as an attempt to tell the broadcaster how to operate. In Dunlop’s final broadcast, she suggested that she had resigned partly because she had not been selected as the Morning Report host - something she had been tipped as a contender for. There was suspicion that her relationship with a Cabinet Minister was a key factor in that decision. (Edit, at least RNZ understand what a conflict of interest is, and that a journo can't do their job if they are shagging someone they are supposed to hold to account). www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/cabinet-minister-kiri-allan-confirms-relationship-break-up-with-mani-dunlop-returns-to-parliament-after-mental-health-break/EMPHKSGC5RFJTFV7SV4OYE37RU/

From Meka Whaitiri's maiden speach to parliament in 2013:
Finally, to my partner KiritapuLyndsay Allan, your unconditional love and support know no end. Thank you for all that you are; thank you for all that you will be.
Well, that didn't age well, did it?

Geez she really is a high speed lesbian train wreck with all the stability of a meth smoking bipolar schizophrenic.
No wonder she has done so well in the labour party.

i think 1 of those previous relationships resulted in a child
now the parents have split, with kiri down in wellington half the time 'working' she hasn't really been doing her 'share' of the child care
does this make kiri a solo-mum?...are we still allowed to say "mum" or are we supposed to say "parent" so non-mum parents don't feel left out?
school holidays, seems like a good chance to catch up on her share of child-care and get her out of her office
of course nz democracy will suffer a little having such an influential cabinet minister taking a 2nd unscheduled holiday so soon after the last one, and her office will have to work harder but i'm sure that think it's worth it so kiri live-the-dream and have-it-all
welcome to the 'inclusion'
all you straight people in stable relationships will just have to work a little harder to keep things running

i didn't know how to write that line......
certainly not in the usual sense
and it does beg-the-question of parentage
her wiki says
Allan married Natalie Coates ....(maori lawyer and partner in nz's leading? maori law firm (kahui legal speciality treaty-claims), where kiri used to work) in 2016 after same-sex marriage was legalised in New Zealand.[7] They had a baby (daughter) just before the 2017 election[32] and Allan brought the baby to Parliament.[33][34] They divorced in May 2022.[2]
surprisingly her wiki doesn't mention the controversy of kiri, as justice minister, having her office provided for free by foon, who as relations commissioner, was employed by the justice minister, neither of them thought there was any conflict of interest there, didn't report it to parliament as require, and foon had to take the fall
wiki also says she's a cousin of taika waititi

The news stories are often using a photo of Allan holding some poncy little lap dog. I've always associated them as a proxy baby for gay couples who can't have babies. Anyway, the way that Wiki line is written, (to me) it sounds like she brought this baby to Parliament to show "look at me, I've managed to have a baby, without a man. Aren't I a great lesbo". And now she is back to photos with the lap dog. I have no issue with gay / lesbian, but when you start brining children into it, it is next level. You need adults in stable, long term relationships. Long term as in 'for life'. Allan's relationship history reads like she changes her partners as often as the fashion changes, and while it was cute having a wife and child, life is just easier with the lapdog. That, and she's supposed to be managing half the country via her 4 ministerial portfolios. I don't think it is normal for corporate executives or senior govt ministers to let their personal life interfere with the delivery of their work to such an extent. Yes, shit happens to everyone, and hetero couples split too. But most people don't have complete meltdowns over it. Chippie got dumped by his missus and didn't skip a beat on the podium of truth. So where to now for Allan? I reckon she needs to exit, and is just working out how. It would be a terrible look for the Labour Govt to loose another senior minister. She could wait till the election and get bumped anyway, or she could sort it now. PS, if she does exit now, Labour are in serious trouble trying to find competent (sorry, semi-competent) replacements for those 4 Ministerial portfolios. At what stage does the PM have to call a snap election, cause there is no-one competent people left in Cabinet to run the country?

Don't worry, when they get re-elected, with the extra green and Maori MP's help, we will have a new talent pool and ideas ready to sort the country out.

You shouldn't denigrate the words competent/semi competent in the same sentence with Labour. Incompetent yes. Self serving drongos. Reminds me of what would happen at my grandies daycare if the carers went to morning tea and left the lid off the jellybean jar.

One of the key criticisms of the public spending watchdog was that the fund had a “complex” framework for assessing potential investments, with three tiers, eight objectives and five principles, which it said were “broad” and “difficult to apply”.Unsurprisingly, it seems Kānoa didn’t really try that hard, applying criteria inconsistently and not scrutinising the claimed benefits of investments.Kānoa, developed initially as part of a coalition agreement with New Zealand First and then retooled for the post-Covid recovery, stands in as a microcosm of a government which abandoned concrete targets for public service performance.Numerical goals for childhood immunisation rates or reducing rheumatic fever were replaced with a nebulous “wellbeing” framework and aspirations. If everything is a priority, nothing is really a prioritywww.stuff.co.nz/opinion/300921772/what-might-lie-beneath-kiri-allans-problem-with-the-bureaucrats
