You have it the wrong way around. Governments including our own are looking at taxing the search engines and social media for linking to local content.
The search engines and Facebook have said whatever, we don’t need it.
Look up Canada and search engines.
It is complete own goal. The tax from Facebook etc will be zero. The independent media that banked the clicks gets zero.

Separate issues DF, same topic. Google is going to control the narrative, read the article, its pretty clear. Sort of complying with disinformation laws that don't exist yet. Canada has bought in laws requiring payment for news to sources, like Australia tried, Face book etc then just basically turned off search results. Public backlash sorted it out in OZ, Canada a little bit different, speaking out against Trudeau often doesn't end well.

Google already controls too many narratives and things faceless multinationals shouldn't.
There are too many mobs like that leaching off too many. I have no problem with Facebook and the rest being told to pay for content or just fuck off.
Using the 'GO30 compared to nurses, teachers and genuinely important things in and around your life index', google/facebook/etc rate as just bearable but absolutely no sleep lost if they all disappeared tomorrow.

The independent media that banked the clicks gets zero. Almost but not quite... It's a not a tax. Governments are requiring Facebook et al to bargain independently with media companies to license their content, rather than just rip it off. If media companies want their content on Facebook then they could negotiate $0. Unsurprisingly that's not happening.

Google did not announce this and they aren't doing it. But sucked in all of you... A head Google was saying just that wide and far over the last couple of weeks as 'something they may have no option but to do if Canada got it's way'. She was talking about how the Canadians want to follow Aussie in charging the bludgers for other peoples creative works. Obviously Google/FB/etc were spinning hard to try and protect themselves.
The news companies then picked up on that and did what google/FB and the others normally do, spun it.
Less than zero issue here if google/FB/etc stopped stealing other people work as I don't go to a bank for insurance or a Doctor to get ammunition or use any of those social media companies for news or anything else now I think about it.

Google have not announced a worldwide ban on independent media. Which is what the OP is claiming. Yes they said they are going to stop publishing from bona fide Canadian media organisations that meet a very clear legislated definition of a media outlet in Canada per the legislation that would require them to negotiate a price. The OP is all about the little guy - the "citizen reporters" - getting silenced by big brother. The irony is that fake media outlets aren't covered by the legislation... because the govt doesn't consider them bona-fide media outlets. The little guy, the citizen reporters, like what's-her-face from the parliamentary riots are going to get all the coverage.

I'd think the OP has seen that said by someone somewhere. There is bound to be a site, probably more, that says exactly that. We live in days where there is a site for every taste and opinion. All we have t do it try to wade through them all and try to make a call on how valid or not that are. When I see or hear something I will try hard to find a number of places or places that are known genuine, that either agrees or disagrees with it. Often you can't find a solid number one way or the other but suss enough and most of the time the 'balance of probability' tends to suggest/tends to confirm something one way or the other.
Just out of interest, how do you define a Fake News site?
