Watched a customs programme early this week where a Chinese organisation failed to pay 3 million in duty/tax on smuggled tobacco and got me thinking.

Although in 'theory' the taxes are to offset the cost to our healthcare system of smokers, so if there are no smokers there should be no additional cost.

Why doesnt this or Govt just say as from 1/1/2025 it will be illegal to import/sell any tabacco products?
No idea what you say to tourist, sorry leave your smokes here and collect on the way home?
Govt will still want 1.7b for hospitals etc so the lost revenue will get added somewhere along the line

You will need exemption for Maori women as it will disproportionately affect them and the treaty says so.

In every $1 of retail price ciggies are sold for - 4 cents goes to the manufacturer 9 cents goes to the retailer 87 cents goes to the Government in tax
Ciggies tax has always exceeded the cost of repairing smokers and by significant margin.
