Via FB Kia Ora friends & whānau, Some of you may have seen the news on Monday about the cruise ship rescuing a person off of a yacht returning to NZ from Fiji. My dad was on this yacht with his best mate Clive and third crew member Shane when the autopilot on their yacht failed and tragedy struck. Kev and Shane were both seriously injured and unfortunately Clive passed away before help could arrive 😭💔 Shane was rescued by the cruise ship, but dad was trapped on the boat with his injuries and late best mate for over 12 hours without knowing when help would arrive. Thankfully he was rescued by the Fijian navy and they endured another 18 hour journey back to Fiji. Kev sustained a head injury, concussion, multiple fractures to his neck, shoulder, spine, ribs, a collapsed lung and is on a drip draining the fluid and blood out from around these fractures. He is in hospital in Fiji and we are trying to get him the best possible care to be on the mend and on his way home to NZ safely ASAP 🩵 We are so thankful to those who have already offered to help financially and would be eternally grateful to anyone else who feels compelled to spare a few dollars if you can, you can do this here at givealittle.co.nz/.../help-get-kev-zach-back-to... 🩵 Even just sharing the post/link would also be amazing too 🩵 Our love and condolences go out to the Nothling family as they navigate their way through this difficult time of losing their loved one Clive and we will do everything we can to support you during this sad time 🩵 Also, a MASSIVE thank you to Shane for supporting dad in Fiji whilst we sort everything out here and wish you the best of luck for a super speedy recovery also 🩵 Big thank you to all those who have sent kind words and supported us over the past few days, we are so grateful for you 🩵 Please send your positive thoughts, prayers and love and help us to get Kev home safe soon 🩵 thank you! This is why you need travel insurance. GF had a medical problem when we were in Vanuatu, medical bill was near on $6k plus we had some expenses (hotel etc), travel insurance paid the lot less $150 excess. Premium was around $300.

As a note, that FB post did not say he didn't have travel insurance, it just listed his injuries and asked for money. I was mainly interested in the extent of injuries. Not what you'd expect from the auto-pilot packing up. That was obviously the start of a chain of events. The other thing that post makes a big assumption about, is that the guy will get better medical treatment in NZ than in Fiji. I wouldn't be so sure about that.

One of my staff had their mother medivac from Bali to Melbourne privately $180k Australian Most travel policies include repatriation to your home country for medical matters, our Alliance policies have this. New Caledonia has an entry requirement that you have travel cover with repatriation as a condition of entry, but they are not very diligent about checking for it. A condition on our policies is that it only covers incidents within coastal areas of the countries being visited, not offshore passages. If you want that you need to go to someone like Topsail. Best travel insurance is to my knowledge International SOS (or whatever they are called now). But even their coverage is not universal, I remember quite a few years ago a colleague needing medical attention for a serious condition, was taken to the best hospital in the city, they just laughed at the SOS card and the country manager had to write a large cheque as a deposit to get her admitted.

We use SOS on our enduro rides in places like Mongolia, Boliva and in Hanoi when a corner went bad and I broke my 2 in 2 spots.
We check in when we arrive in country then check out when leaving. In Mongolia they have their own big fuck off Russian helicopter they use to evacuate people, there is a wee shortage of roads is in they only have 2 of them.
We used to insure thru Tower who had a specific policy but these days they have dumped many of those and just6 going hard after the everyday shit by the looks.

As always the devil is in the detail and you need to be careful of the exclusions in the generic travel insurance policies. This is the exclusions page from our cover, which we did check before signing up for it Alliance exclusions.pdf (266.28 KB) of note 14.ii qualification on scuba diving 14.vii ocean sailing excluded 21 qualification/capacity limit on motorcycle riding 24 interesting if you are going on a "medical holiday", say going to Singapore to get your hip done 16 well we won't go there... So, if you are indulging in "out there" activities, more specialist cover will most likely be required

So, if you are indulging in "out there" activities, more specialist cover will most likely be required Yeap the devil is indeed in the small print. When biking we use specialist products designed just for that and most of it is about evacuations. The policies tend to lean towards 'Crash big and we'll try to evacuate rather than use local medical'. As we tend to be in places where medical can be iffy, at best, they see that as a cheaper long term option I suppose.
You can question exclusions and often they will remove them if you do. As I have many insurances I often get hit with exclusions, Flying as a non-fare paying passenger and scuba are very common. But when you go back to the insurance co with stats like "According to the Insurance council I am 10 times more likely to be harmed driving to the airfield than when I'm flying (true story) yet you don't exclude being in a car, WTF is all that about, are you just having a go?' They say good point, exclusion removed. Diving is similar so the same argument works there as well. So I have next to no exclusions on all my policies.

Sounds like the reporter doesn't know the difference between a yacht and a rowboat. Not surprised though.
I would have thought ocean rowboats would all be self righting...

The Atlantic rowing race ones all have to carry spare drinking water as ballast. The ballast water makes them self righting. The story said the guy was dehydrated and sunburnt. Just guessing here, but what's a bet his water maker packed up, he drank all his ballast water and the boat turned over?
