From the pics I have seen, it very much seems that the mast has broken after contact with the cruise ship.
Obviously they were seeking assistance before the incident but looks like it escalated? Awful for all involved.

The MSM media reports are fairly confusing and at times contradictory. The mast was definitely up before it contacted the cruise ship. But apparently the mayday was due to a "mast failure" injuring crew. I wonder if this is a translation type issue and they lost the mainsheet like that larger boat a while back. Pure speculation on my part with zero facts, but if one is dead and the other two injured a loose mainsheet is a more likely scenario. Maybe the old crash gybe and then carnage in the cockpit with the main block flailing around. It's happened recently and caused carnage. What was the name of that bigger boat? The incident that killed the Brin Wilson guy. The owners were rather wealthy and got major criticism of staying in the cabin and not trying to look for the MOB.

Looking at the picture on that other site taken from the cruise ship, the rig looks fully intact with all sails furled so they must have been under motor. So we will have to wait for further details as to how this unfolded. ie why were they seeking assistance. The previous event you referred to was Platino, Nick Saul owner of B Wilson's killed

I thought for a second it was Platino the cursed killer boat from hell. It had a iffy reputation before Nick took on the resto and it's got worse since. Do everyone a favour an just burn the fucking piece of shit.
I wonder what happened, reports in are a little conflicting. Sad to hear someone got killed.

it would appear the yacht has had all surviving crew taken off and is still afloat, drifting around. no further updates in any media as to what happened beyond postings above.

Widow says it sounds like the autopilot packed up. Skipper was knocked uncouncious by the boom, dead 24 hrs later. Second crewman also injured by the boom. Apparently the Fiji Navy has scuttled the boat. Very experienced and capable sailor by all accounts. Sad accident. Wonder if boom-brakes or some other form of gybe preventer will become mandatory for CAT 1? I'm not saying they should, but with the history of the Platino and Second Life, there is strong evidence they should be used. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/stricken-fiji-yacht-sailor-clive-nothlings-widow-wants-husband-home/SYV7ZKBGMNERHMBYUXSCNEFR6E/

Sad situation alright, but then shit does happen.
The gybe seems to be a key aspect which is why I also rig up a boom slower, I'd never use a gybe preventer though.

Is it a thing with 3 pulleys in it and a line going from toe rail to toe rail that lets the boom go over but slows it down / takes the energy out of it? I've never liked tieing the boom back with a line to the bow or somewhere, as in a preventer. A hassle to rig and drop, and highly likely to fail dangerously if loaded up suddenly / put under shock load.

Just something to slow the boom should you crash gybe, a drag device is probably a better description for many.
Locking the boom is for fools as what happens when you get caught, the bugger is to windward and often very loaded up. The boat is doing crazy stuff and you let the boom loose it flys across even worse. Getting caught like that puts you 2 minutes to rig trashing o'clock. So I rig things that should we gybe the boom is free to move but in a controlled manner due to all the induced drag I install.
Some buy all manner of fancy things to do that, often at considerable cost. But as I'm a yachtie I'm that tight no way am I paying for gizmos like that as you do not need them. All I do is put an oversized shackle, stainless preferably but not mission critical, on the boom, usually the vang connection or there abouts. I then run a line from something strong, chainplates being the go to usually, then up to the shackle where I wrap it around the body as many times as it takes to get the drag I want them lead the line down to the opposite sides strong point. Done.
Now I have a boom drag device that requires no ongoing fiddling, will not hold the boom in any place and will allow the boom to move but slowly.

Via FB Kia Ora friends & whānau, Some of you may have seen the news on Monday about the cruise ship rescuing a person off of a yacht returning to NZ from Fiji. My dad was on this yacht with his best mate Clive and third crew member Shane when the autopilot on their yacht failed and tragedy struck. Kev and Shane were both seriously injured and unfortunately Clive passed away before help could arrive 😭💔 Shane was rescued by the cruise ship, but dad was trapped on the boat with his injuries and late best mate for over 12 hours without knowing when help would arrive. Thankfully he was rescued by the Fijian navy and they endured another 18 hour journey back to Fiji. Kev sustained a head injury, concussion, multiple fractures to his neck, shoulder, spine, ribs, a collapsed lung and is on a drip draining the fluid and blood out from around these fractures. He is in hospital in Fiji and we are trying to get him the best possible care to be on the mend and on his way home to NZ safely ASAP 🩵 We are so thankful to those who have already offered to help financially and would be eternally grateful to anyone else who feels compelled to spare a few dollars if you can, you can do this here at givealittle.co.nz/.../help-get-kev-zach-back-to... 🩵 Even just sharing the post/link would also be amazing too 🩵 Our love and condolences go out to the Nothling family as they navigate their way through this difficult time of losing their loved one Clive and we will do everything we can to support you during this sad time 🩵 Also, a MASSIVE thank you to Shane for supporting dad in Fiji whilst we sort everything out here and wish you the best of luck for a super speedy recovery also 🩵 Big thank you to all those who have sent kind words and supported us over the past few days, we are so grateful for you 🩵 Please send your positive thoughts, prayers and love and help us to get Kev home safe soon 🩵 thank you!
