Another day and another pile of ammo I can use to throw in the face of the delusionals and delicates who like to have a crack at my cows poohing activities Bit of a cock up that one isn't it, especially when lots of sailing kicks off this weekend.

Presume it’s only closed from swimming not other on-the-water sports like sailing?
And isn’t it only a recommendation ie not legally binding?
Usually I ignore the safeswim warnings otherwise I’d never go swimming around Auckland. And I’ve never been ill. but when it’s a bad as this I’ll drive to the north shore instead.

Haha, no, it's not legally binding. But in this instance I think it is more Darwinism. It is a trunk sewer that serves "most of central and west Auckland". The shear volume of wastewater overflowing is going to be significant. Significant enough I'd expect there to be visible signs of this in the harbour water, either in odour but highly likely 'foreign objects' I got in trouble once. We were replacing watermain in London, and were working through a housing estate. The guy marking up the services had overlooked a 63mm gas main servicing an apartment block. Consequently it was struck by the trenching guys and caught fire. So big flames leaping out of the road, etc. Luckily this is surprisingly safe, as there is no risk of a gas explosion and the public normally stay out of the way due to the heat and flames, meaning traffic management plans and stuff aren't such an issue. The housing estate had limited access points, and this guy comes up in his car completely flipping out at us cause he wanted to get through, and that we hadn't notified of a road closure, didn't have a diversion route sign posted etc etc. I was like, fuck it, if you want to go through, you go through, don't let me stop you, you just drive through the flames. Apparently if someone wants to win the Darwin award and is a kunt, I'm still liable...

Bit of a cock up that one isn't it, especially when lots of sailing kicks off this weekend. To be fair to the guys at Watercare, this sewer was build in 1911, out of bricks. It is 13m deep, so basically physically impossible to access. And they are part way through spending 1 Billion dollars on the Central Interceptor that will divert all the flows that this pipe takes from central and west Auckland direct to Mangere WWTP. I know they have done work to rehabilitate parts of this line with fibreglass liner inserts, made by Maskels. Other than physically accessing the sewer, one of the major logistical issues is not having any way of diverting the flows anywhere else while the do the work. It looks like this spot was just too hard to rehab before this incident. Looking on the gis maps, it appears the failure is at a very long radius bend just off St Georges Rd. The short story is bends are basically impossible to slip-line / rehabilitate. Straight pipe it is possible, bends not so much. That, and in high flow, all the energy of the water pushing up to one side of the pipe, causing both turbulence and a weak spot. Imagine if the last 27 Mayor's decided to spend money on infrastructure instead of Martariki and Dwalli festivals?

So they’re saying 3 days to fix it and then 3 days to allow waters to recover enough to be swimmable. So a week, give or take.

Go about 1.5km out from Mairangi bay and there is a constant brown patch.Yep over flow shore sewage works, guess undetected due to being directly in currents?

That is probably the cleanest water in the harbour. Especially at the moment. It's the treated water from the Rosedale WWTP. Nothing in the resource consent says they have to match the colour of the discharge water with the sea...

Takapuna was good water today. A bit sandy for first 100m due to stirrup from E swell but pretty clear once 150-250m out.
