Watched that big 2 handed start last evening and then thoughts turned back in time to when the AC was competed for by sailors racing yachts out in real weather.
So I did a duckduck and dived into R1 of the 87 event as it popped up first. Talk about picking the lemon, that was the edition where Dennis kicked Kookabra 3 in the manbag and bloody hard.
While the racing was boring the onboard cameras were funny showing the crews in stubbies and very 1980's all around.
Which was the best event for spectators?

I was in Perth for the 87 cup, it was great both the on and off the water action. Whilst the 12m were slugs, watching the crew work in 20-25kts Freemantle doctor was awesome. After NZ lost the challenger finals to Dirty Den, they trialed with Kookaburra, on the first upwind leg they started behind and to leeward, yet sailed straight under Kooka and then pointed up above them. The Aussies knew the game was up even before the defence races started. Tom Schnackenberg and I are distant cousins, during the cup trials and defence he and Annie had weekly Wednesday drinks for anyone who wished to wander in to their townhouse, there were top people from all the teams wandering in and out, one week I walked in to find Bruce Farr and Russell Bowler there knocking back a few wines. The crews were having beer skulling, arm wrestling competitions (until someone's arm was broken) and "coffee grinder" speed contests -until someone broke the machine. Just a great experience.

For me probably the first edition in the AC 72 cats in SF , the racing was close until it wasn’t . Also they barely had control of the things and were still learning how to sail them right up to the last race .
FYI the TNZ AC72 is shrink wrapped lying next to a fence in a storage yard on the onehunga village motorway off-ramp . Surely someone will make it into a frankencruiser ?
