Did coastal yachtmaster years ago at Manukau Tech. Jim Lott was the Tutor. Had to go into the city to sit 2 three hour papers at the completion of the course. One was compass and metrology and the other was all chartwork. The class chartered the Spirit of NZ and went up to Mokes on Friday night, then Barrier on Saturday and back home Sunday. Bloody good weekend. Me too and then Ocean YM as well. They are hugely different than courses of the same name today. Ocean had two 3 hour Met exams alone and 4 3hr others, Comms, Nav, Legal and engineering.
I was the very last person to do them thru the MoT. My fingers were the last ones on that morse button, we had to do 76 character blocks. My tutor, Cpt Little dropped me a cunning hint, be the last one into the morse blocks. The theory being the battery would be run down so the light wouldn't flick on and off sharply making it trickier to work out which letter I was doing, it worked and I passed.
Those being Government generated credentials can by used to reduce sea time, they did have a decent sea time component in them, and other bits and bods in the newer qualifications.
We did have SatNav and very early GPS back then and it was covered. As part of Ocean we did a wee bit on Semaphore, not much though as it was regarded as old but only because it was.

I didn't carry on to Ocean YM. Trip to Barrier was bloody hilarious. All had 1 hour anchor watches in Fitzroy on Saturday night with varying amounts of alcohol consumed and a fresh SW blowing. Each watch to instructed on what land marks to keep an eye on. By Sunday morning we were over the other side of the bloody harbour.

Coastguard unfortunately. Beèn sailing the Med for years. 1st time I was asked for a ICC was just Croatia this year. They were just inquisitive rather than pushing a reg.
