So today I thought I'd go dive on the hull and give it a nice clean prior to Christmas.
Found commercial grade oysters on the turn of the keel. One patch about the size of a dinner plate.
Then I thought, I better check the shaft anode and see how long I've got before I need to dry out properly on the tidal grids.
Anode was not there....
OK, have to dry out properly, flag cleaning the hull. Decide to finish replacing a broken fresh water pump in the heads. Just one connection and two hose clips to go... Corrected sized piece of hose is at home. Grrr
Decide to flag it and leave boat. When rowing away realise the stern ladder is still folder down in the water. Row back, put stern ladder up. Notice a divit / chunk out of the transom edge about a foot above the water line. No idea how that happened, but go find my special clear PVC tap to seal it up and prevent water ingress while I work out how to ix it properly.
Get cramp in leg while twisting and leaning out of dinghy to apply said tape.
Fuck it, go home and have a beer.

Always tried to have our boats back in the water for labour weekend. I could guarantee the first weekend away I would have something fail, even though I thought I had checked everything thoroughly.

back in 2018 when I was working in Brazil, arrived back on leave after 3 mths absence. When I arrived on CZ went to unlock the hatch I could hear an electric motor running - of course WTF is that. Got inside and found it was the fresh water pump. Looked at the house bank voltmeter, it was down to 10.5 V. I would normally leave her with the house bank turned on kept topped up by a solar panel, but had forgotten to turn the pump off. The local boat builders were supposed to check CZ every month but had not. A little detective work finally revealed that the shower on the stern had been dripping, pump would do its thing until the water tank was sucked dry, then kept running continuously with the coupling between the pump head and motor eventually shaken loose. Motor kept running off the solar panel. One battery had dropped a cell, required new batteries for $2k+.  |

some years back the annual trip south to re-acquaint with our trailer sailer that lives down there... usually it's a fairly tight schedule to get to the boat and get it in the water and then relax. the boat itself has never had anything at all give trouble nor the outboard. on this occasion all was going well until the headsail was unfurled, presenting 8 equally spaced identical holes along the foot... firken rats grr. no problem i think - i'll swap it for the no 1 genoa stowed below (even though it can be a handful in the sounds). next problem quickly surfaces - the furling line is now too short for the extra wraps on the drum... a quick check below - no line long and thin enough to do the job. back to Havelock (against most of 5 knots of tide) and jump in the truck and up to the little chandlery there - "we've just sold out of 6mm - would 8 do?" so back to the boat and fit the new 8mm line to spend the rest of the week wrestling with too much rope on the drum or too much furled sail for any sort of pointing. first world problem i suppose but i'd love to catch up with that rat .

Here is a story for you.
Popped down to the club cause I wanted to check a tidal grid at low tide. Not one I normally use but the grids are super busy so I thought I'd suss it as a back up option.
There is a guy there sitting on the boat ramp wall looking completely fucked.
I say hi to him and he say's he's just having a quick sit down as he's a bit tired. Mentions he's just finished chemo and indicates a thing attached to his guts.
Turns out this guy is drying out his 40fter. It's dead low tide when I get their. The thing is COVERED in oysters like you have never seen before. Like, completely covered, maybe 10cm thick all over. He's done the bow area only, and has cuts all over his hands (very bad for someone who's just done chemo). Turns out the boat has a sail-drive. I couldn't see it for the oysters. It's completely amazeballs he could move the boat at all. Says he was doing maybe 1 knt at full cruising revs...
The club rules are that you can't leave any marine growth on the grids, so this guy has been fucking around trying to catch everything in a bucket in one hand with a scrapper in the other.
I know we should embrace the suck of sailing, but I reckon this guy is taking it a bit far, trying to dry out a 40fter buy himself, deal with a whole season worth of bluff oysters on the hull all while recovering from chemo. Oh, and has a hospital appointment later today for the thing attached to his guts.
I happen to have a wrecking bar and my dive boots in the car (cause you always have dive boots in the car, right?) So, since I think he's embracing the suck of sailing a tad too much, I find a coal shovel and wheel barrow at the club, clear the majority of the oyster of the hull with my wrecking bar and shovel, rake them off the grid and made a full to overflowing three wheel barrow loads of oysters disappear (outside of the environment, of course).
He doesn't actually have a plan as to putting more AF on, I get the impression he just wants to use the boat this summer. He did mention the cancer had spread and he's paying moonbeams for some fancy drug to help. Possibly has a shorter view on plans and life than how long a coat of AF will last...
While I'm struggling to stay on top of the maintenance on my own boat, I see me putting AF onto someone elses boat in the near future.

While I'm struggling to stay on top of the maintenance on my own boat, I see me putting AF onto someone elses boat in the near future. If you do let me know and I'll come help. I can't let such a good sanitarian help a fellow boatie in need without trying to help. One on the brush and one rolling, we'll nail the bugger in no time. Besides I do like antifouling, not the removal but the installation of. I even come with my own gear.
I thinking I'm about to be sucked by a sailboat. Gearing up one to go for reassembly and it appears the non-skid I used has gone moldy. I used some of that 'non-skid' power one paint mob puts out, International I think but don't take that as gospel. I remember a while back there was a issue with a batch or maybe more that went icky, I think the stuff I used is that one, BUGGER!!!!! Covered it on mold killer so we'll see what happens. |

Thank you for your kind offer. If an opportunity presents itself I will get in touch. My Father and I went back on the Sunday and finished cleaning his hull properly. We didn't AF because the guy wasn't organised, didn't have any AF, and was reluctant to rush off and get some. In hindsight that was a good thing, as the hull needs some prep. It took us the whole tide to get it clean epic water blast and hand scrapping barnacles off. We wouldn't have had time to apply AF. We had all the gear, rollers, trays, brushes, mixers etc. Needs a haul out and full sort out. He had had the copper based AF on the saildrive (very bad). We cleaned that down to bar alloy (there wasn't much on it). The rudder is basically bare. There is a bare patch (never painted) around the sail drive hole (no SD boot). I wouldn't AF until giving it a good wet-sand and getting to some better condition substrate to paint on. He can't haul at the club if the boat is over 10t, he thinks it is over, but some digging indicates the Whiting 40 is 8t. There are similar sized, age and style boats hauled out, i.e. a Wright 41. I'm not sure what he is going to do, but do be honest I think quietly it is not his priority. He is still working and I think he just wants to chill out on his boat over the break. Kick the can down the road on the AF. The anode on the stern leg is ok for a while, so it is just a question of how fast it fouls again. I've no knowledge of his prognosis, but with bowel cancer spread to the lungs I'd take a punt longer term planning isn't such a priority in the short term. |

Maybe you should have a little relaunching ceremony with him and rename his boat “Carpe Diem”.

Mines the actual paint,cant see why though,sanded through gel coat,sugar soaped and wiped with de waxer. primer/sealer then coats deck cream. Yes I know the powder your using. It some how eats in to paint to help cause anti skid? Bit like the old days when you put epson salt on deck and it washed away to leave anti skid tread. |
