All done & dusted. Got into the water at Long Bay at 7.30am and landed Little Manly beach 1hr 18mins later. 4km in 78 mins so had a little bit of tidal benefit.

Amazing effort. Well done. I couldn't swim that far to save myself.
Is that sunburn?

No it’s not sunburn - I deliberately try to swim very early in the summer to stay cooler - it’s a strange effect in the photo which makes my back look strangely red. But it’s same colour as rest of me. Go figure! 🤔

Actually I’ve realised that 20yrs ago I did almost exactly the same distance - in one of the harbour swim series - and it took me exactly 90mins. So it’s good to know that after 20yrs I’m no slower!

That's a pretty good time. Went over to Aussie last year to watch our son in law do a half iron man. 1.9 klm swim took him 29 minutes and he's in the top 10 in Aussie in the 30 to 40 age group. I suppose they have to leave a bit in the tank for the 90 k bike ride, then the half marathon.

Attempting another swim today. This time anticlockwise around Motuora Is.
Conditions looking marginal because by the time the tides are with me (early afternoon onwards) a N breeze might have developed which will slow things down a bit.
I reckon it’s 50:50 whether I’ll complete it - but it’s worth heading out to give it a try.

If you see any good kingfish PM me the spots ;-) PS don't become shark bait.

Mission accomplished. 2hrs 18mins. Easy first half but second half was a bit of a slog into 10kts headwind for 2.5km.

That seems a fast time. Did you get a mileage?
Oh, and you're still a nutter 😁

6km / 3.3nm.
Should have been closer to 2hrs but second half was into wind-over-tide chop which slowed me down a bit.

I need help from the brains trust with planning my next swim.
I’m wanting swim from N end of Tiri to S end of Kawau. I’m looking for the most favourable tidal window for a period of about 6hrs.
If you look at the tidal charts that SJB shared a few posts back, you’ll see the flows for the ebb only ie the hours after high but not the hours before high (flood). Apparently the flood is supposed to be just the ebb in reverse.
But from looking at these I’m struggling to visualise the best 6hrs window for Tiri to Kawau.
Can anyone else make better sense of this than me?
Aside from the tides, the weather is looking potentially favourable for Thursday which isn’t far away. Hence I’m keen to understand the best tidal window to make the attempt.
Any ideas?!

Hence I’m keen to understand the best tidal window to make the attempt. Any ideas?! The distance from the North end of Tiri to Kawau is around 8.5 NM, depending on landing point, I suggest aiming for SW point as tidal flow out of Rosalie Channel will push you a bit eastward. What distance swum do you anticipate per hour? Then consider the tidal flow is around 1 kt average for the outgoing tide, will be a little more at mid tide. So to my mind you want to calculate total time for the swim, then planning to reach halfway at mid tide to maximise assistance, you can determine when you should start based on tide times and swim time. Trust that makes sense. Right, back to baking bread
