This will do it: Albany, Auckland has seen 76.8mm of rainfall in the past hour alone, 86.2 in the past three hours as the storm front has continued to move southeast over north and central Auckland.
The roof at Pt Chev Countdown has collapsed. Significant surface flooding around, including on the Southern Motorway. Lots of photos of cars floating, a van in water up to its windows, etc. Police calling for motorists to stay home...

This morning in Auck Noah was getting his ark ready again.
This afternoon he’s standing down because summer is back.

Yesterday metservice were talking 150 - 230mm for us in the eastern BoP for today (had 140 mils yesterday). That band of rain is getting down to business now... In recent times my spare time seems to be used up rebuilding the farm following heavy rain ( less sailing time grrrr). a while back a 315mm culvert which had been coping nicely for 30 years got overwhelmed so i did a full rebuild with a 450mm pipe and compacted rock - it lasted 3 weeks. almost makes one believe in climate change...

I bet you are wishing you had space for more water tanks All mine, house and garden tanks, are full and overflowing! Grrr, I got a water cart in last Friday, cost $210! The problem with rain, is there is no certainty as to when it will actually arrive. That, and we erred on the side of caution incase all the drivers had covid when I really needed it. Tanks aren't full yet, but I'm not short of water. Collectively at about 75% capacity. Caught 12 cubes on Monday, haven't actually checked since then, but have had another 55 ml of rain (I think) which should be another 11 cubes. In very heavy rain my guttering can't handle it, and a lot spills. I'm currently pondering a guttering and collection system re-design, as per a slightly OCD engineer would.

I haven't checked any rainfall quantities for your area, but based just on the rain radar, the entire catchment / or catchments will be getting a massive rainfall. The rivers are going to be very, very high. Normally there is a temporal effect, where a front moves across a catchment, it can drop a lot of rain, but in different parts of the catchment at different times. This event looks like it is going to nuke the whole catchment all at once. How dry was the area before this event Jim? around here everything was bone dry, so the water would have run straight off the land, rather than soaking in. That would increase the initial river flow intensity a little as well, I'd expect. And when I say catchment, I would normally mean a discrete geographical area. This one looks like it stretches from Taupo to the coast, and from Tauranga through to Opotiki in one go, and around East Cape and south with the previous bit.

Definitely quite dry here until monday . this is a nice area to live but we do get localised downpours - 300mils overnight a while back. The biggest problem on the farm here is the neighbouring (upstream) pine forest that sends down (with no remorse whatsoever) thousands of cubes of soil and hundreds of pine trees and logs/slash whenever we get a decent bit of rain.

Your having just got the water cart in is like people who just filled up with petrol before the price dropped More down pipes and a bigger collector pipe to the tank will be the solution to the spills

The biggest problem on the farm here is the neighbouring (upstream) pine forest that sends down (with no remorse whatsoever) thousands of cubes of soil and hundreds of pine trees and logs/slash whenever we get a decent bit of rain. We don't have a forrest hanging over us but we do have a quirk where we seem to be on a bit of transition zone or something. We commonly see rain to the West, North or East of us that comes close enuff to give us a few spits or maybe a brief shower but nothing substantial. We were told about it when sussing in the area but seeing it in action makes it stand out.
We do have the 'pest farm' next door. A very large pile of native bush that was gifted to DOC. All they use if for now is a gorse nursery and a suburb environment to grow wild porkers and possums. The gorse and possums we could all do without but the porkers are keepers.
Our tanks were good as fill but Mondays downpour put some great water back into the dams. They were down but no where as down as this time last year. This time last year the place was brown as, tinder dry and the dams nearing empty, it was getting to be a concern. This year we have dry but there is green and dams were at about 50% prior to Monday.

Gisborne Civil Defence manager Ben Green said the rainfall was a lot heavier and had come in sooner than expected. "I'd almost describe it as biblical," he said.
Looking at the rain models, I've noticed how over the last 4 weeks at least, and again with this system that the lows park just off East Cape, and wont budge. Sometimes they drift out towards the Chathams a bit, but still wont budge.
With this one, it looks like the lower east coast (Napier to Gisbourne) is going to get a second helping of rain... Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru must be getting good at getting flooded by now. How many times is it this year? Not to mention the forestry slash issues.

Never seen it blowing so hard through the marina here at GH. SW 40kts reading on my anemometer. Big waves in the marina and overtopping the breakwater 2hrs before high.
My mainsail was coming unfurled out of the mast but the marina guys spotted it and furled it back in before any damage. Coincidentally I was on my way to the boat anyway. Have doubled up furling lines. 😳
Check you boats, ropes & sails people!
