… and the usual cracks are appearing in the ground as it dries out. Hope it lasts for another couple of months. That’s what the subsidence repair companies are saying too 😊

I’ve just been a bit frustrated by the the SE/S/SW winds being 10-15kts stronger than forecast for the last week. It makes a difference!

Went fishing in the deflatable yesterday evening, mainly cause today's forecast looked unsuitable. Had to put up with 15/20knts when I was expecting 5-8. Then today it's been glassy and overcast (perfect fishing conditions).
Metservice spoke of 25/35 this afternoon. Hence why I didn't risk it today. But just finished filleting my quota and a descent puff came through. PW shows Amrm Bay has just gone from next to nothing to 20/25, and a big shift to boot.
But the forecast for this weekend is positively schizophrenic. It's like an AI bot has taken over metservice and is just spouting random numbers and directions. Westerly 5 going easterly 25... I made that up, but I challenge anyone to make sense of this weekend's forecast. Better still, a good bottle of whiskey for anyone that can make plans based on it, and actually successfully pull it off - I mean boating plans, not doing the groceries and watching a movie plans ;-)

On the flight I make sure I increase my blood alcohol level high enough to kill any virus-nasties. Result = slightly woozy but no cold!

Wind was all over the place coming out of Kawau Bay and I was punching into the incoming tide, had a nice sail across Omaha Bay, 12-15 WSW but has now gone very light and am motorsailing. Hopefully once I get a bit north of Cape Rodney the breeze will pick up from Te Arai and Managwhai to Bream Bay.

well that was a rather exhilarating sail, as expected breeze filled in from SW and by Whangarei Heads it was 20, gusting 25. Ideal conditions for CZ on a broad reach, sitting on 8-9 kts, couple of bursts to 10. Eased off a little after Toots, then cranked up again to peak gust 27 kts. Then off Whangamumu wind went south and dropped to 8-10kts, rolling around in the sloppy sea so finished up motorsailing last 2 miles to Cape Brett, rounded at 0605, very little wind after there and right on the nose so dropped the main and motored into Oke Bay, anchor down at 0715. Of course with the wind up and down had to take in a reef in the main, later let it out, then later again put it back in! Looking forward to some sleep now.

We have been improving the wave measuring buoy fleet around the gulf, basically changing the mooring systems from ones speced for the top of Fjords to systems that will hold in an ocean.
Chatting to the team doing these they said all wave indications you can see today are modelled by NIWA. Now actual data is coming in they have compared actual to modelled to find Opps. The 2 sets of numbers don't match that well. In a month or so the actual data will be publicly available. If it had been visible 2 (?) Saturdays ago, the windy as one, you would have been able to see that in the morning 800m from Anchorite Rock the average wave height was 5.5m. That's average not maximum which was over 8m.
New gear going into the Tamaki River tomorrow, that could be fun to watch.

I would be very keen on having a link to that data when it goes live. My boy loves going snorkelling at Goat Island. I've been trying to take him almost all summer, the big issue is it's shithouse when there is a NE swell pushing in there. Forecasts have been saying it's 8/10 for surfing just about every time we can get the time to go up there. I've also noted very dubious looking swell forecasts, and major mis-matches between different forecast sources. There aren't any live camera's (that I know of) at Goat Is, and I'm relying on FB updates from the Dive & Snorkel place, but they are a bit retrospective and usually a day old for my planning.
