I expect it was more than a little cool overnight for those afloat, it was like walking into a cool store when we came out of the Dairy Flat hall last night.

Yes heating helps a lot for family winter cruising.
Beautiful calm night - cold but crisp morning air - perfect for a swim around the bay then hot shower on the transom in morning sun. I’m still in shorts & t-shirt.
Wife about to go swimming too…

Last night I found myself wishing the temperature would rise to 'seriously fucking cold'. Due to that and some experimenting the future warm gear shopping will swing back to more wool, I've gone biggish in polar fleece and while still good, wool is gooder.

Last night I found myself wishing the temperature would rise to 'seriously fucking cold'. Due to that and some experimenting the future warm gear shopping will swing back to more wool, I've gone biggish in polar fleece and while still good, wool is gooder. Yeah, this cold weather is such a pain. I've been struggling with not putting too much wood on the wood burner. I've worked out that if I put more than one small lump of what used to be a camelia tree in the fire, the house gets so hot I'm at risk of stripping down to my jocks. If I load the wood burner up, or put too much hot burning wood on, I need to choke the fire back and open a window. I hate choking the fire as it causes soot and smoke emissions. Had a nice pile of oak that will burn hot but slowly, so the perfect combo, but I'm getting a bit low on that. Have loads of macracapa, good for starting the fire and getting a good ember base, but burns to fast so we get hot, then cold as it dies down, then hot again. I've got smaller branch sizes of pohutukawa and the camelia which I am experimenting with to get Goldilocks warm. Don't have that problem with the heatpump, but this is not heatpump weather. You know the old saying, you can't drink whisky infront of a heatpump... (Cold winter's night, a hot fire, an armchair and a nice single malt)

I’m enjoying the crisp cold. The sea swimming is exciting - yesterday morning was epic. I miss my old open fires.

Oh good golly. Sorted morning emails, sussed acreage for lime/fert spreading in new machine today, thought "I wonder if the cyber gremlims will let me see forum and surprisingly yes....... only to be confronted by first the idea of Fish in his untidy whities and then Fogg trying for a self vasectomy via bloody cold water.
Luckily the calfs distracted me for that momentary second before a image of either could properly form.
Bugger, it's raining. Don't want that, I have 3t and a new spreader I want to have a crack with.

It's really hard to find proper woolen jerseys these days. I'm talking the like the submarine captain or old fisherman's jersey. I had a really great one my Nana gave me decades ago. Turned out to be an excellent wool jersey to wear while sailing, under my oilskins and what not. Used it full time when sailing in the UK. When it finally died I really struggled to find a new one. They all seem to be targeted for high fashion women or the Chinese tourist market. I ended up going with a Noreswear one. At the time ended up ordering a couple (interweb order) and just had to suck and see which one was any good. It's a proper crew neck with scratchy wool - kids don't like it but it keeps me nice and warm. PS, have you seen the price of swandri stuff now?!? It's gone full high fashion as far as I can tell. Not sure if you can even get the classic swandri bush shirt.

Anyone noticed this high of 1040 Hpa coming over? There has always been a rule that a high of 1036 Hpa will cause trouble with wind around it's edges, so it will be interesting to see what happens with this one. Doesn't seem like normal winter weather to me. Looks more like a classic late summer blocking high.

Not sure if you can even get the classic swandri bush shirt. I love op shops and even more local 'Church Shops', the ones a few ladies run with proceeds to the local XYZ church whatever group. They have the best relishs, jams, fruit from the backyards and things like wool sox, caps and often jumpers. All hand made by mums and grandmums. Theres a goodie in Dargahole I hit every time for a new relish or jam and when in season tomatoes that are grown old school i.e. in dirt outside under the sun. The Wa loves the pre-loved books. We also picked up some cool knitted baby shit for GD1. Theres a goodie in Belmont as well and I did a very high speed fly thru of the Sally Shop (??) in Te Hana, that had some cool old school furniture in it. A old shit store in Paparoa I picked up what's panned out to be a 1960's classic design chair. I paid a hundy and a mate who knows shit reckons it could be worth 5 hundy. There's lots out there beyond the Warehouse and Farmers, and it's fun to suss. I've started sussing local sheds here in rural. Only got into 2 so far but found a few cool things in can old single cow manual milking machine. The idea being I can milk the cow and then make cheese and then smoke it to have with my farm made bacon washed down by my planet saving Gin and Rum. Once summer comes I'm going to go all 'American Picker' on the wider area, there be treasures in those falling down old shed. American Picker is a TV show and quite interesting. So hunt down a Grandma Fish, they have the jumpers.

I try to do my clothes shopping counter-season when I’m travelling.
Next week I’m back to Europe and so I’ll be on the look out for summer stuff.
And like fish I fancy a new winter woolly so I’ll probably pick up a couple of chunky lets from the end of winter sales when I’m London next Feb / March.
