I love listening to Julia Galef. I’ve watched this several times before but I’m as guilty as anyone of slipping back into ‘Soldier Mindset’ when it suits. So as we stare into the face of a new year, I thought it was worth sharing here and encourage anyone with an ounce of curiosity about how we think, to sit back with a cold beverage, open your mind and invest 10 mins watching this. And ask yourself whether any of it resonates! Happy New Year everyone! 😊 youtu.be/3MYEtQ5Zdn8?si=W_tHsee75XV_vrGO

I would swap 'mindset' for 'personality'. A lot of what she talks about as positives are more ingrained behaviours than the sort the changes on a whim or easily. Super easy being a soldier but not everyone could be a Scout.
I'm not sure what the talk was trying to get across though.

My takeaway was that we are mostly all guilt of being Soldiers - with her story about the convicted ‘spy’ being an example of the dangers of that, including groupthink.
And she’s encouraging people to (1) be more aware of that and (2) see the benefits of being a Scout instead. And how much better the world world be with fewer Soldiers and more Scouts.

Been pondering this and think everyone can be a soldier yet not everyone can be a scout.
Being a soldier is easy, too easy, and most people are to assorted degrees. But being a scout takes work and the ability to recognise when it is needed, that is something many won't and can't do.
In parts of my existence if I was a soldier all manner of chaos would rule so I often ponder the equivalent of 'is scout or soldier time?' before taking the next step, mostly it has to be Scoutso it is.
While the world would be far better off with more scouts less soldiers that won't be allowed to happen and you can see forces at work making sure that doesn't happen i.e. meta and other such social media mobs who rely on a degree of conflict to keep their platforms alive and just not boring silos.
I wish Julia's desires that Scouts take over the world but I'm just not seeing it. Human nature says 'No, I'm not havin it sorry'.

Which is why I posted it.
To encourage people to ponder it and take control of how their own mind works and consciously avoid the pitfalls of getting sucked into Sm and groupthink etc.
It even feels liberating and fun when you do it.
Another way to think about it is to firstly understand “What is the mainstream view or opinion that everyone has here?”
And then to ask yourself - and others - “Hold on, but what if the opposite is actually true? Why don’t we entertain that ridiculous idea for a second? Even if we go back to our original stance let’s just have a little thought experiment?”
That’s got to be a good one over a few beers - if nothing else you could use it as a wind-up, GO30! 😊

I don't think people get 'sucked in' to soldier mentality or group think, I think it's more a personality trait, same with Scout, amongst others.
Soldier mentality is easy, Scout isn't hence why soldiers out number scouts by a huge margin.
If the numbers of each squared up even a little all hell would break loose in so many areas we'd see a massive societal change. So while Julias desires are admirable I just can't see it happening on a mass or sustainable basis. Especially so in the current environment where some very powerful forces are working hard to keep soldiers soldering and increase their ranks.
Those powerful forces will be being lead by Scouts not Soldiers.

Yes I’m not suggesting whole populations are going to hear this and switch their behaviours because as you said behaviours are driven by personality, when we’re on ‘autopilot’.
And I don’t think Julia was expecting that either.
But look at the audience - it was a TED talk - and the target audience for these sessions are people who are likely to be above average intelligence, more intellectually curious than most and potentially more open-minded to adopting some of the insights they gather from interesting speakers, like Julia.
So mainstream population changes, no.
But some changes by more open-minded individuals who are prepared to switch from ‘autopilot thinking’ to consciously checking and adjusting their thinking & behaviour, to see what happens, possibly yes.
